good registry cleaner for ME

Anyone know of a good, easy-to-use registry cleaner for
WIN ME? I have heard conflicting advice about RegClean--
some say it's OK to use on WIN ME, but at download.com, it
does not list WIN ME on the list of compatible systems.
Please advise--thanks.

Out of curiosity why do you want a registry cleaner? What problems are
you having?

Microsoft's Regclean 4.1a works with Win Me but only checks a limited
range of common keys not the entire registry. Whichever cleaner you use
remember always to retain the deleted keys and values as an undo file so
that if you experience problems you are able to undo those changes.

A popular cleaner used with Win Me is ToniArt's EasyCleaner but it is
essential to exclude Help when cleaning otherwise some essential keys for
the operation of Win Me's Help & Support including system restore will be
deleted.

The reason I'm asking about this is not because of any
computer problems. Rather, I wondered if it might be
useful for system maintenance. I have recently switched
antivirus programs (NAV to AVG)--I'm concerned about
leftover files from that and other uninstalled programs
over the last 4 years. Would a registry cleaner be
appropriate for this situation, or do you feel it should
only be used when there are system problems? Thank you
for your replies.

Personally I have no use for registry cleaners but then again I don't
install invasive software from Symantec either. :-) That's not a reason
though why you shouldn't use a registry cleaner if you want, it's your
system, all I suggest is that you ensure you retain the logs and/or backup
the uninstalled keys and values so you can easily recover from any
registry cleaner induced problems.

I agree with Mike on this - there ain't no such beast as a 'good' registry
cleaner (except learning what should/not be there).

However, you can ease the pain of getting rid of Norton bloatware, by using
the tool that they provide (it doesn't get rid of everything, but does go a
long way towards it)

Regarding NAV removal, I do have one--probably idiotic--
question. When I uninstalled Norton (BTW-it came with my
machine) from Add/Remove Programs, the uninstaller tried
to auto-connect with the Symantec website, and I had to
let it through my firewall to complete the uninstall
process. Since I had never uninstalled NAV or any AV prog
before, I thought--mistakenly--that the uninstaller was
retrieving the removal tool. My dumb question is: why
did the uninstaller need to connect to Symantec's website
to do the job--is this normal? Thank you for your advice
by the way--I will try the NAV tool and leave registry
cleaners alone, for now.

That was with old version.
The current version is ok

Even the most recent version of ToniArt's EasyCleaner had problems until
patched with removing values in the VARLDID key and who knows what other
horrors may lurk there as yet unrecorded. However what I was trying to
stress was the need to retain the undo files regardless of the registry
cleaner used although perhaps this wasn't clear from my original post.

Personally though I have never felt or seen the need for general purpose
tools unlike say those that remove all traces of NAV or Zone Alarm.

the wrinkles removed as of the various registry cleaner's I've played with
it was one I like.
