Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several unlogged actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the problem even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame since the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now, then it must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in the boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec entries I can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my machine, I would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay continues.

advice appreciated.

Default Interpretation of failures and delays at boot.

Uninstalled the Norton Anti-Virus program and the only
long delays remaining (72.33 secs. total) are for the many
entries which occur before TSRQuery is run. Here is a copy
of the excerpted list of entries from the end of the
detailed Bootlog Analysis Report run after uninstalling

The questionable list of items seems to start

for the start-up or if there is a problem which can be
corrected? Thinking of using anti-virus software called EZ
ARMOR LE by Computer Associates. Your further thoughts and
advice appreciated.

Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several unlogged

actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the problem

even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame since

the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now, then it

must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in the

boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec entries I

can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my machine, I

would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay

continues.

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager

TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot. Thanks for

the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove (uninstall)

the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays. A lot

of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is far

too
long.

George, there is nothing abnormal that I can see there....it looks like many
bootlogs I have seen. What is the actual time it takes right now for your computer
to boot, from the time you see the first boot screen with the memory count, to the
time you first see the Desktop load up....I mean actual time on the clock on the
wall?

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager
TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot. Thanks for
the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove (uninstall)

the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays. A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is far

too
long.

Default Interpretation of failures and delays at boot.

George, there is nothing abnormal that I can see there....it looks like many
bootlogs I have seen. What is the actual time it takes right now for your computer
to boot, from the time you see the first boot screen with the memory count, to the
time you first see the Desktop load up....I mean actual time on the clock on the
wall?

You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove (uninstall)

the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays. A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is far

too
long.

BTW, when I say the actual boot time on the clock, I mean the boot time when you are
doing a normal boot, not a logged boot.

Another suggestion that may or may not shed any light, is to do a clean boot, then
while in the clean boot environment, do a logged boot and see what the log show, and
also how long the boot takes in real time on the clock.

George, there is nothing abnormal that I can see there....it looks like many
bootlogs I have seen. What is the actual time it takes right now for your

computer
to boot, from the time you see the first boot screen with the memory count, to the
time you first see the Desktop load up....I mean actual time on the clock on the
wall?

for the start-up or if there is a problem which can be
corrected? Thinking of using anti-virus software called EZ
ARMOR LE by Computer Associates. Your further thoughts and
advice appreciated.

Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several unlogged

actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the problem

even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame since

the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now, then it

must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in the

boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec entries I

can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my machine, I

would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay

continues.

Default Interpretation of failures and delays at boot.

BTW, when I say the actual boot time on the clock, I mean the boot time when you are
doing a normal boot, not a logged boot.

Another suggestion that may or may not shed any light, is to do a clean boot, then
while in the clean boot environment, do a logged boot and see what the log show, and
also how long the boot takes in real time on the clock.

for the start-up or if there is a problem which can be
corrected? Thinking of using anti-virus software called EZ
ARMOR LE by Computer Associates. Your further thoughts and
advice appreciated.

Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several unlogged

actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the problem

even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame since

the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now, then it

must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in the

boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec entries I

can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my machine, I

would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay

continues.

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager
TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot. Thanks for
the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove (uninstall)

the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays. A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is far

too
long.

Here are the clock-on-the-wall times for a normal boot:

1. Win98 Startup Menu 0:00
2. Win98 Blue Sky Page 0:30
3. Black Screen ending C:\ 4:40
4. Green Screen arrow/timeglass 5:35
5. Icons appear on desktop 7:35
6. Timeglass disappears 8:15

Yesterday I ran Maintenance Wizard - the defrag took about
8 hours. I thought it a good idea after removing Norton
Anti-Virus - that was the only thing done on this computer.

For comparison here is the Bootlog Analysis Delays and
Failures Report run just before the above timed boot:

I'm puzzled by the first entry taking 154.72 secs. for
=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP\SYS. Also, I've taken a once-over look
at the eight page clean boot troubleshooting procedure and
the article on clean boot by Gary Terhune that you
referenced. Am I ready to try those procedures?

Sorry to be so much trouble and to take so much of your
time.

BTW, when I say the actual boot time on the clock, I mean

the boot time when you are
doing a normal boot, not a logged boot.

Another suggestion that may or may not shed any light, is

to do a clean boot, then

see what the log show, and

Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several

unlogged
actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the

problem
even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame

since
the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now,

then it
must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in

the
boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec

entries I
can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my

machine, I
would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay
continues.

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did

to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager
TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found

and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot.

Thanks for
the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver

with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver

you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and

you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove

(uninstall)
the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its

own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays.

A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is

far
too
long.

Default Interpretation of failures and delays at boot.

Here are the clock-on-the-wall times for a normal boot:

1. Win98 Startup Menu 0:00
2. Win98 Blue Sky Page 0:30
3. Black Screen ending C:\ 4:40
4. Green Screen arrow/timeglass 5:35
5. Icons appear on desktop 7:35
6. Timeglass disappears 8:15

Yesterday I ran Maintenance Wizard - the defrag took about
8 hours. I thought it a good idea after removing Norton
Anti-Virus - that was the only thing done on this computer.

For comparison here is the Bootlog Analysis Delays and
Failures Report run just before the above timed boot:

I'm puzzled by the first entry taking 154.72 secs. for
=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP\SYS. Also, I've taken a once-over look
at the eight page clean boot troubleshooting procedure and
the article on clean boot by Gary Terhune that you
referenced. Am I ready to try those procedures?

Sorry to be so much trouble and to take so much of your
time.

-----Original Message-----
BTW, when I say the actual boot time on the clock, I mean

the boot time when you are
doing a normal boot, not a logged boot.

Another suggestion that may or may not shed any light, is

to do a clean boot, then
while in the clean boot environment, do a logged boot and

see what the log show, and
also how long the boot takes in real time on the clock.

"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several

unlogged
actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the

problem
even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame

since
the actions are not

If you didn't have the problem before and do now,

then it
must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in

the
boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec

entries I
can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my

machine, I
would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay
continues.

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did

to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager
TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found

and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot.

Thanks for
the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver

with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver

you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and

you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove

(uninstall)
the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its

own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays.

A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is

far
too
long.

You can certainly try the clean boot procedure and see how it affects the startup
time. I am curious about the long delays myself....I am going to see if I can run
this by some people for their opinions.

Here are the clock-on-the-wall times for a normal boot:

1. Win98 Startup Menu 0:00
2. Win98 Blue Sky Page 0:30
3. Black Screen ending C:\ 4:40
4. Green Screen arrow/timeglass 5:35
5. Icons appear on desktop 7:35
6. Timeglass disappears 8:15

Yesterday I ran Maintenance Wizard - the defrag took about
8 hours. I thought it a good idea after removing Norton
Anti-Virus - that was the only thing done on this computer.

For comparison here is the Bootlog Analysis Delays and
Failures Report run just before the above timed boot:

I'm puzzled by the first entry taking 154.72 secs. for
=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP\SYS. Also, I've taken a once-over look
at the eight page clean boot troubleshooting procedure and
the article on clean boot by Gary Terhune that you
referenced. Am I ready to try those procedures?

Sorry to be so much trouble and to take so much of your
time.

-----Original Message-----
BTW, when I say the actual boot time on the clock, I mean

the boot time when you are
doing a normal boot, not a logged boot.

Another suggestion that may or may not shed any light, is

to do a clean boot, then
while in the clean boot environment, do a logged boot and

see what the log show, and
also how long the boot takes in real time on the clock.

time you first see the Desktop load up....I mean actual

time on the clock on the

The questionable list of items seems to start
with "Initializing KERNEL" and ends with "InitDone =
TSRQuery." Do you know whether this is a normal

sequence
for the start-up or if there is a problem which can be
corrected? Thinking of using anti-virus software

called EZ
ARMOR LE by Computer Associates. Your further

thoughts and
advice appreciated.

Quoting MS MVP Richard Harper:
"TSRQuery is not to blame. There are several

unlogged
actions that happen
before TSRQuery is run, so it appears to be the

problem
even though it is
not. There's no good way to tell what's to blame

since
the actions are not
logged."

If you didn't have the problem before and do now,

then it
must come from some change
you made just prior to the experienced increase in

the
boot time. Likely it is some
driver causing it. The delays due to Symantec

entries I
can't help you with, as I
do not like or use their software. Were it my

machine, I
would uninstall all the
Symantec/Norton software, and see if the boot delay
continues.

items.
Any further help to hone in on those two delay

places
will
be appreciated.

My Logitech plugs into a serial port. What I did

to
replace with a standard mouse driver was this:
StartSettingsC. PanelSystemDevice Manager
TabMouseHi-
lite MouseDriver TabUpdate Driver buttonNext
buttonSelected Search for Better Driver...etc.
After the search, a better MS driver was found

and I
okayed its installation.

I will uninstall Logitech mouse and reboot.

Thanks for
the
explanation - sorry didn't get it the first time!

-----Original Message-----
You say you replaced the Logitech mouse driver

with a
standard mouse driver. Do you
have a serial mouse or a PS/2 mouse? The driver

you
added is "Standard Serial
Mouse", which is only for a serial mouse, and

you are
still loading the Logitech
driver.....Loading Vxd = LMOUSE.VXD

What I meant for you to try is to remove

(uninstall)
the
Logitech mouse (not add a
mouse manually), reboot, and let Windows add its

own
driver on its own.

I will see what else I can find re your delays.

A lot
of
them are from Symantec
anti-virus loading, though the 8-minute time is

far
too
long.

Have never used MSBackup, so uninstalled and

then
changed
file names per instruction. The tape detection

has
been
disabled and it seems to be working okay so

far!
