Help - Foot, Gun...BANG
Greetings all, I have a problem. I have a Dell laptop running Win98 and
was trying to install a Linksys Wireless-B PCMCIA adapter. After going to Linksys's site and downloading the latest driver, and installing it, Windows will not come up fully now. When I boot the computer I get the Win98 splash screen, then the desktop wallpaper comes up, and right before the desktop icons appear a dialog box appears with the following... Error Starting Program The MSVCRT.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:RtlGetNtVersionNumbers. ....Then a lovely white dialog box that say's... Error loading Explorer.exe You must reinstall Windows. The same thing happens in Safe Mode. I am able to get to the command prompt though. Anyone have a solution other than reinstalling Windows, I'd rather not go that route and have to reinstall all my other apps and settings unless I absolutely have to. Can this problem be recovered from? Any additional information needed, just ask. Many thanks to all who respond. Keith Huff |

Sounds like you installed drivers or software for the wrong version of Windows, or
at least the wrong msvcrt.dll file. It's good that you can boot to a command prompt, as you can fix it from there. You need to replace the msvcrt.dll file that was installed during the setup of the adapter, with the one from your Windows CD. You can do this using the EXT command, as described he http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;129605#7 See here for details on the error, and how to fix it, in the Win98 section of the article: PRB: Your Computer Does Not Restart After You Install a Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Application That Includes a MSVCRT.dll File: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330314 -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "-ks" wrote in message 6... It appears that the installation has replaced your MSVCRT
file with a version that requires an updated NTDLL file, but has not provided the newer version of NTDLL. You could try searching the www for the correct version, although this can be a complicated task, and installing different versions has to be done with some caution. -----Original Message----- Greetings all, I have a problem. It's actually probably the other way around ;-)

Normally, the second file in this type of error message is the culprit but I
agree with Glen that msvcrt.dll is the probable cause in this particular case. But, the proposed fix in the KB article is pretty weak. There are a lot of newer versions of the msvcrt.dll file than what is on the W98 CD and restoring the wrong one might fix this problem but cause others like Office and IE products not working right. I recommend that OP go to: http://support.microsoft.com/default...on/dllinfo.asp and do a search on: msvcrt.dll. On the resulting page, check out the versions of the .dll by clicking on more information. This will tell you what programs contain that particular version of the file. If you have that program installed, that is the version of the msvcrt.dll you should restore providing there is not an even newer .dll further up the list. (Just speculating, I think you might find that the version of the file that is installed is too new and you might have to go down the list to find the right one.) Once you have identified the version you need, use this procedure to replace it (assumes the computer is not booting into Windows). To replace a missing or corrupt file with an original copy, you must locate the file in the .cab files on your W98 CD or from whatever source media that contains the file. (Note: the file may not be in a .cab file and if so, disregard the instructions on .cabs and simply copy the file to a floppy disk.) Using the machine you are posting with, open Explorer and select the folder containing the .cab files. Open the Tools menu, click Find, Files and type: *.Cab in the Named box. Type the name of the wanted file in the Containing Text box and click Find Now. This lists the .cab file your wanted file is located in. Double click the .cab file to see what's in it and right click to extract the wanted file to a floppy disk. Boot with a floppy start up disk--CDRom support is not required. If you do not have a start up disk, make one with the Fat32ebd.exe file located on the W98 CD: tools/mtsutil/fat32ebd. At the A: prompt, put in the floppy containing the file you extracted. Assuming you are replacing a .dll file named xyz, type: Copy A:\xyz.dll C:\windows\system\xyz.dll and hit enter. Once the file is copied, remove the floppy disk and reboot. While .dll files are filed in the system folder, other files may be filed elsewhere so make sure you specify the right folder. If this does not cure the problem, take a look at the ntdll.file using the same procedure as above. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "glee" wrote in message ... Eh?
The response was: It appears that the installation has replaced your MSVCRT file with a version that requires an updated NTDLL file, The MS article is: You receive an error because your setup package installs a version of the MSVCRT.dll file on your computer that is incompatible with your operating system They look the same to me, except that the anonymous response expanded a little on what the incompatibility actually is. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "glee" wrote in message ... Yes - I read it as searching for MSVCRT, but it is ambiguous, Perhaps
deliberately so, as it's likely that updating either would fix the problem. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "glee" wrote in message ... I am not aware of any apps that update the Win98/98SE version of ntdll.dll, are you?
All later versions are the ones that come with Windows ME, XP, and 2K (and SBS), according to the DLL Help Database: http://support.microsoft.com/default...on/dllinfo.asp That is why I think it is the msvcrt.dll file that must be replaced.....the Windows 98 version on ntdll.dll does not have the function indicated in the error, and there is no reason for the msvcrt file to expect a later version with that function to be on a Win98 machine. At least, that's the way I see it ;-) -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ...
