Dual Boot with Win 98
Hello, right now I have Win98 SE installed on partition C (FAT32). I have other
partitions (FAT16). I have one more FAT32 available. What I would like to do is install XP in the other FAT32 partition (actually N partition). I need to install 98 in that partition first as my XP is upgrade. Can this be done? I have Boot Magic but it does not say how to install a new OS, only gives you ability to choose which one you boot. I have a lot of programs installed on C and on the FAT16 partitions, if I install 98 to the other FAT32 will it detect these programs (I don't want it to, I want to start "fresh" with the new install?) After I install 98 (full) on "N", what will happen when I try to install XP? Do I choose to boot the "N" 98 OS then just upgrade with XP, will it know to upgrade 98 on the N partition without upgrading my SE install on C? I do realize I won't be able to read the FAT16 partitions with XP, that is fine. Dual Boot with Win 98
Your post is confusing. You start by saying that you want to install XP on
N: and later on you say you want to install W98 on N: I think maybe what is confusing is that you think you have to install XP over a W98 system because it is an upgrade disk. This is not an XP newsgroup and that is where you should ask XP questions; however, I am fairly certain you can install XP to a blank partition and then during the installation process, show it your W98 disk when it asks. I know you have Boot Magic--do you also have Partition Magic? If so, what you do is set the partition you want to install to as the active partition. I'd also hide the other operating system's partition during the installation. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Tom" wrote in message ... N: and later on you say you want to install W98 on N: Howdy, thanks, yes, I have to install 98 to the blank partition (N) first as my XP is an upgrade. So for short while I will have 98SE on C (keeping just as is) and 98 Full on N, the XP will be upgrading the 98 Full on N. I will check XP group also I know you have Boot Magic--do you also have Partition Magic? If so, what you do is set the partition you want to install to as the active partition. I'd also hide the other operating system's partition during the installation. Hey great, I do have PM so that is what I need to do!! Thanks much!! You didn't read my post close enough. You don't have to install W98 so you
can upgrade--the upgrade disk should load to a blank partition and during installation, it will ask to see your W98 CD. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Tom" wrote in message ... I'd also hide the other operating system's partition during the installation. It's quite a while since I did this, but as I recall, hiding the win98 partition in PM before installing XP won't prevent XP from finding it and setting up its own dual boot. I seem to remember thinking how tiresome that was ... after all, if I've hidden the partition it's because I don't want the install to find it and it should respect that. |

I have never used PMagic with an XP install because I use BootIt NG so your
recollection may be correct. When I hide partitions with BootIt, *nothing* sees them. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "WoofWoof" wrote in message ... I've never tried BNG but I've heard lots of good things about it (many
of them here) and that is certainly a good feature. Ron Badour wrote: I have never used PMagic with an XP install because I use BootIt NG so your recollection may be correct. Where did you get the idea XP can't read FAT16.
