Default disk space

hi, got an old pc. dont want to invest anymore money it,
but want to keep hold of it as i use it for multimedia. it
was bought in 1996 with win95 os and a 2gb hard disk, of
which about 1.6 gb was free. it was upgraded to winme
about 4 years ago. i only have 300mb free on my disk (same
2gb disk) and no games or anything. is there info on if &
how it is possible to get rid of files not being used, so
i can free up more disk space and avoid having to buy a
new hard disk.
cheers

Have you checked to see what is using that space? Have you run the Disk
Cleanup utility? ( found at Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools)

Check the size of your Windows\Temp folder (reboot and then delete its
contents), and Temporary Internet Files (Windows\Temporary Internet Files)
and if more than a few MB delete the contents using Control Panel |
Internet Options | General where you will find a Delete button remembering
to check when asked the box to also delete all offline content.

Check also the system restore archive (C:\_RESTORE) if you have system
restore enabled. The maximum space used should be 400MB but you may
prefer to reduce that to the minimum of 200MB. You can adjust the space
allocated to the restore folder, System | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk and adjust the restore slider to your preferred setting.

mike s, I add that if you wish to keep this ancient machine for
"multimedia", then adding a second HD may be very cost effective since
40-120 GB, ATA100 or 133, 7200 rpm PATA drives currently cost $US 50-90,
near Boston and nationally. You could then store many multimedia files in a
readily retrievable format. Ask Mike M, as he is an authority on such file
storage and creation.

And moving some personal files to the second drive will free up much space
on the current C:\, facilitating disk defragmenter, and SR.

If all it is being used for is a standalone media player not connected
to the Internet, *and* you aren't willing to shell out $50 for an
additional drive, then you might consider switching back to Windows 95.
Either that or surf on over to www.litepc.com and check out their
stuff (98Lite is a free product which works with WinME as well).

Other things:
-Convert the drive to FAT32 if it isn't already.
-Monitor Swap File usage then set a small minimum amount
-Run DiskCleanup and Defrag... alot
-use MplayerC (download from SourceForge) instead of WMP/Real/DivX/etc.
bundles or stick with WMP 6.4

First thing would be to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and
uninstall any software you don't need. and also any Windows
components/accessories you don't need.
