Default Losing connection to internet after a few clicks

I have a dsl router. I have a xp desktop and an old 233 dell notebook.
I have verizon they don't support anything other than xp. I never get
more than half my dsl speed. I have tcp/ip set to obtain ip
automatically from router but not dns. I had to enable specific dns
and set it to the modem's ip address. Somehow verizon is monitoring
the network and disallowing my win98 connection after 20 minutes or so.
How can I fool their network?
