Default Cannot download files

Recently I discovered that I can no longer download files using IE 5 under
Win98SE. I get an error message to the effect that the site is either not
responding or cannot be found.

It obviously could be found or I wouldn't be trying to download a file from
it.

Previously I was able to download files without any problem; only within the
past month has it begun this behavior. I have checked and double-checked all
of my IP settings and nothing is wrong or missing.

Any ideas?

You may simply have a corrupt cache. Please create a new one as per the
instructions at the URL below:

Tried that but it didn't work. I also ran AdAware and Spybot to remove any
malware. Nothing of major importance found.

Typically when I go to do a download, IE 5 acts as if it is going to do the
download but at the point where it should ask me for a directory to save it
to, I get the error message.

Also, it appears that someone has set a Password for Content; I know I
didn't do it and I don't know how to hack it to fix it. I think these two
things may be related -- the password and the failure to download.

Regarding your content advisor problem:

This is classed a security issue and is rightly handled by Microsoft.

They will ensure that you are not a minor trying to bypass parental
controls, that you are the rightful owner of the machine, or that you are
working with the authority of the owner of the machine, and that you are not
trying to bypass restrictions imposed by your employer.

Regarding your downloading problem, perhaps something here will help - a lot
of info there, but work through it to see what may relate.

Thomas: Here are a few things to try...

1) Tools accounts / Delete files & Delete Cookies.
In IE 5 you may have to click on Setting, View Files. In this window Press
Ctrl-A (to select all) and then delete everything.

Go to www.tucows.com and try to download something. Are you able to? If so,
problem is with the site you are trying to download from.

If this fails: Have you installed a Dial-up Accelerator?
Try to download a picture. Does it give you a Program.exe error? If so you
have installed a dialup download accelerator that configured your Internet
Explorer to use program.exe to download instead of iexplore.exe.

To see if IE is damaged or hijacked, you can use Netscape to download
something.
http://wp.netscape.com/download/ftp_...ml?cp=dowinfo4 gives you info
on how to reach the Netscape FTP site. Hopefully, you will be able to
download using FTP. Otherwise, you will need someone to burn you a copy.

Anyhow, if none of that fixes it, here is what I need.

1) All running processes
2) Can you d/l using Netscape?
