Before I switched on the computer just now I had the thought that there
might be a need for Flash to make the sound. It had to come from
somewhere, and it sounds like a PCM sample, and clearly can't be in the
PNG or the HTML without being so big it would be hard to hide them there
in any format. I didn't know that JavaScript had so many detailed
drawing commands (perhaps enough to rival Flash when used in combination
with CSS), but I bet it still can't command an audio port on its own, OR
with CSS, but Flash can, and it might explain the empty-looking page, if
the Flash content is meant to be heard, not seen.

Definitely IS the sound source, according to the stuff near the end of the
HTML, but I saved it in the same dir as the PNG, and changed the two
references in the HTML to match, using the same paths used for the PNG near
the top (with escapes, as those used), but I still can't get sound out of the
saved doodle.

Another thing is that recoding function. Part of it may be done by Flash, but
also involve the URL that is generated, and I played something I recorded
last night by using the browser history. I keep the browser cache on a RAM
drive, so there's no doubt that nothing persisted overnight to save that
pattern except that URL in the history. I retried, after pulling the ethernet
plug, and the cached copy of the guitar doodle appeared, after a delay, but
no sound happened, and no movement or colouring of strings.

It's clear that Google not only use server side scripting as part of this
thing, but likely also record every note anyone ever played on it! This is
easy, as all they have to do is store all those incoming URL's.

Recorded, not played. But knowing Google, who knows? I recently saw that
EVERY letter I typed into the search box was sent to them even if 'Google
Instant' was switched off with the off state saved. I get the feeling they
feel a need to know if and when we pick our noses. Some of those resisting
Google Street View will agree that they do, no doubt.

In defense, I appreciate google making an effort to find WHAT I'm
looking for, not what I ASKED to looked for.

Even their ads along the side, are so well targeted that I've actually
gone to them and found further information..

My gripe now is that the internet is so old that there are MANY
defunct pages still coming up in search engine results. Irritatingly,
many are exactly what I was looking for, but are now gone. You'd
think the search engine could add a 'checker' to their results to cull
out dead URLs.

Today, google presented Mark Twain's 178th birthday, but for some

Any idea on that one?

What about this:http://www.google.com/logos/2011/twain11-hp-bg.jpg

from the html source code.

Now that's just embarrassing! *Thanks, got it.

NP.
The best google logo was the Les Paul guitar.

Not sure though if you can play the guitar with your mouseovers on old
('98 compat) version browsers.

WOW! Thanks for that URL. I saw this one go by and could not save
it. Since there is purposely NO sound card in this machine, I missed
that the strumming created any sounds. Very imaginative.

Years ago I simulated an electric guitar, guitar pickup, by
calculating the magnetic fields around the pickup, then put a
'trajectory' of the string's motion as it vibrated inside the fields,
and then predicted the voltage generated by that motion. It was
amazing to me that even with all the deficiencies of the original
system [as clearly illustrated by simulation] that those tones coming
out of an electric guitar could possibly even resemble music, but they
do, and a whole industry came into existence. Fun simulation to play
with, especially could hear the effect of 'height' adjustment on the
pickup heads.

You mean stemming? Like root getting rooting, rooted, rootless, etc? I think
they do synonyms too. I'm ok with it, in principle, but in practise it could
be better. Wometimes we KNOW what we want, and Google insists on telling us
we're wrong just because a thousand morons spell it wrong, or something.. An
exact string search would be nice, but we don't get one. It's standard in any
programming language because an exact string match is THE simplest possible
construction, yet Google refuse to let us search that way. The only
conceivable reason that Google would permanently disallow exact searches when
it's the easiest thing to allow, is the same kind of reason that until
recently, the GPS system barred accuracy to within about 100 metres to anyone
outside the US. As with other strange behaviours in widely used technology
(the use of keylogging in Android-based smartphones recently discovered and
now getting questions formally asked in the US Senate), it REALLY pays to
look the gift horse in the mouth.

Getting a good thing for free is never a reason to yield power equivalent to
soul. The internet could be about to reach crisis point in this matter, along
with much of the other weird world crises all apparently occuring together
right now.

I use Google a lot, I find it useful, but I deeply distrust it. Anything less
than real distrust seems less than healthy to me, because it does things we'd
NEVER allow a government to do, or a private firm under the jurisdiction of
our own government. I think we give up far too much control in exchange for
little more than convenience. The history of decisions like that is rarely
good.
