Try running defrag in Safe Mode. Alternatively check out the many
thousands of similar posts that have been posted on this subject in the
last 6½ years in this newsgroup including those containing links to the
third party utility scandefrag.

Running it in Safe Mode will probably solve your problem, but you can also
get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance program
there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk Defragmenter.

It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with problems like "drive's
contents have changed: restarting...".

Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use. It is a small
download.

http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2...efrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

First configure Disk Cleanup (tick all options), then ScanDisk (as suggested
by ScanDefrag) and at last Disk Drefagmenter.

Click RUN and let the process finish. If the HDD is as messy as it sounds,
it may take a while to finish the 3 processes, but be patient, it will pay
back.

FWIW - I run AVG 7.5 (free) here on my WinMe box(es) and have never found
that it interferes with Defrag (unless AVG's Control Centre is actually
actively scanning my HDD's of course) either in Safe or Normal Mode.

Perhaps your Defrag/AVG update 'problem' is coincidental and maybe something
else is preventing Defrag from completing - especially as you've noted that
the problem still exists even when you turn-off AVG. For 'peace-of-mind',
why not uninstall AVG and see if the problem remains. You can easily
re-install AVG again - or any of the several alternatives, if you prefer.

As Mike M alluded elsewhere, there are can be many reasons for Defrag to
fail - but I've never heard of an AVG connection before.

Tks Mart
after some trial-and-error I located the problem section.
If I turn off the resident shield in AVG the defrag works like normal..
(The startup progs didnt' seem to have any effect when I turned them
off..)

only other time I've had a defrag problem like this was using Nortons..

I've always had to turn off the ZIClient (zone alarm firewall) to run the
defrag but it now seems I'll have to add the R shield aswell..

"OOPS,"
please don't missunderstand the HDD isn't in to bad a shape I just defrag
every 14-16 days as rule (we've lost a LOT of HDD's over the years and
have developed certain practices to help avoid data losses..) and this
was the first defrag since we updated to the newer AVG..

"ever change to the puter software had its shakedown problems..

Tks to everyone for the help...

Hi RTS, the R shield was turned on here - at installation, by default -
(albeit set to 'Scan infectable files' and not 'All files') and it's never
seemed to upset Defrag. I just set it to 'All files' to see if that setting
would affect it - but no! - all ran well. Just reset back to 'Scan
infectable files' and again - Defrag is still all well and running
correctly. So ... can't account for or explain your problems.

Perhaps an uninstall/re-install *may* be worth a try?

There might be some kinda conflict on this puter, I've got a collection
of DOS communication programs for work and a collection of old Win data
programs not used by many today..

A very old program of Lotus and a speciality program for image work..

All in all I guess its a wonder it as few problems as it does.. LOL

However I have ID'd one reocurring problem but I can't seem to correct
it..
(The wife has a habit of turning off the puter in the middle of a instant
messenger session.. (LOL) not much I can do about that but rant and rave)

Tks to everyone

RTS, may I suggest that you use a process viewer to see what is executing
prior to running defrag.
I recommend SysInternals "Process Explorer", if you don't have one now.
PE will report all executing processes, and permit you to kill the undesired
ones, one at a time.
The core WinME OS will need only about twelve processes to run.

Some judicious investigations will quickly reveal any conflicting program/s.
I suggest avoiding any win16 programs if you are using them.
