I should have checked here first
I had to reinstall my WindowsME operating system, kept
getting an error that would not let me complete the installation so I had to install it as WINDOWS1. The computer boots and runs great, but I found that after reinstalling Office 2000 Premium, when I click the Word icon (or any other office icon that I have placed on the desktop) I get the messages : Preparing to install Office 2000, followed by the message: Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office 2000. Word eventually comes up and works. If I click on a saved document icon, I have the same result. In the later case, it does not automatically open the document (you have to search for it) but opens the program only. What do I need to do to make the newly installed Office 2000 Premium see that I am running my computer from Windows1 nor Windows? I placed this post in the "Office Forum" and one person suggested to run it past this group for any ideas. Did I screw things up by installing the OS under Windows1? What should I expect to keep changing out so that everything will work from that folder? Thanks for your help and for making it through such a long post! Gary |

I had the SUWIN error problem. I'll look into all of the
ways to deal with that and try reinstalling windows into the correct folder. -----Original Message----- Since you have chosen to reinstall Win Me to a folder other than the original windows you now need reinstall all of your software including Office. Alternatively you have many hours of diligent work in front of you correcting the many erroneous entries in the registry and elsewhere that point to the old windows folder. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP GaryB wrote: I had to reinstall my WindowsME operating system, kept getting an error that would not let me complete the installation so I had to install it as WINDOWS1. The SUWIN problem? Which one of somewhat in excess of a possible1,000
SUWIN error codes did you encounter? Personally I feel that fixing that problem, whichever it might have been, would have been far easier and quicker for you - especially if the problem was that that refers to VERX which is very quickly and easily fixed by renaming wmploc.dll. I can't remember the exact error message, but when the
installation was about 80% complete, a SUWIN error screen came up and it would not continue installing Windows in that folder. Thanks for your help and suggestions. Gary,
The error at 80% is almost certainly that which refers to VERX. A problem easily resolved, much quicker than the problems you are going to have to undo as a result of installing into a new Windows1 folder. The best of luck in either editing the registry or reinstalling your applications. I hope it doesn't take you too long. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP gary b wrote: I can't remember the exact error message, but when the installation was about 80% complete, a SUWIN error screen came up and it would not continue installing Windows in that folder. Mike,
I thought I should give you a follow up. I installed the latest Office Security update last weekend and miraculously Office works like it is supposed to even with my OS in the Windows1 folder. That's good news indeed Gary. It appears that installing the Office
Security Update repaired the missing or damaged entries in the registry used by MS Office. Out of curiosity were you asked to insert your Office CD during the installation of the updates? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2004] Gary B wrote: I thought I should give you a follow up. Yes, Mike. Good question. I had to put in the original
Office CD for this update. Thanks for your help and quick attention to posts. Gary B -----Original Message----- That's good news indeed Gary. Thanks again Gary for that additional information. It seems you benefited
from MS Office repairing itself, or rather its entries in the registry, when you installed the patch. Cheers, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Shell/User Gary B wrote: Yes, Mike. Good question. I had to put in the original Office CD for this update. Thanks for your help and quick attention to posts. |
