Default Installing Flash-10 activex control for IE6 on Windows 98

I'm going to post this info, but I still shake my head at the thought
that there are those of you out there that use IE6 as your primary
web-browser for Win-98/me instead of Firefox 2.0.0.20.

I'm posting this to the Win-ME group on the assumption that these
instructions will also work on that odd-ball OS.

To install the Flash 10 activex control, you MUST:

A) Install some version of KernelEX higher than 3.6. So go and download
version 4.5 beta 2 if you don't already have version 4.x of KernelEX.
Download link is:

http://softlayer.dl.sourceforge.net/...-4.5-Beta2.exe

You should also have "Microsoft Layer for Unicode" installed on your
system. This was made by Microsoft back in 2001. If you don't have it,
get it he

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...42/unicows.exe

The info and support page for KernelEX is he

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1309...lex-45-beta-2/

Post #2 in that thread will tell you what else you need to do to install
the Flash-10 activex control, which is:

B) You must change two registry values that identify your OS as Windows
98:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\

Change the value for "Version" from "Windows 98" to "Windows NT"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\

Change "VersionNumber" from "4.10.2222" to "5.20".

Once you've done (A) and (B), you can run the Flash-10 activex install
file.

You can download an older version of that file from he

http://download.gokab.com/download/S...2_36_winax.exe

Or you can download a newer version he

http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flas..._player_ax.exe

I know the older version works on my system. I haven't tried the newer
version.

Once you've run the version of your choice, it's probably a good idea to
change those registry values back to their original setting.

To test if your flash player is working under IE, try it on this page:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html

This will tell you what version of flash you have.

I can verify that flash content on these websites:

- google streetview (maps.google.com)
- youtube.com
- msnbc.com

All work fine when following these instructions.

I like to give credit where it's due and, in this case it is:
Thanks for the explicit instructions as they were sought.

Harry.

Default Installing Flash-10 activex control for IE6 on Windows 98

Hey 98 Guy,

You really know ur stuff mate.

Bucket loads of thanks for your detailed instructions on how to install
Flash 10 on IE 6. They work a treat!!

I rarely use IE6 but, since I have it installed anyways, it's worth
installing the Flash 10 there for the odd time that a page doesn't
render well in Firefox or Opera.

And please don't despair that that you often have to repeat the same
information in different threads. It is very much appreciated.

You're doing a fabulous service to us Win98 users.

Ed
