Default still having vid adapter driver probs...

hi, ron, jeff et al. i've tried all your suggestions
video adapter driver problems and nothing has worked. to
refresh your memories, in order to attain my desired
800x600 and 16-bit, i have to reinstall the video adapter
driver at each reboot. i've tried removing everything and
reinstalling, removing everything and starting in safe
mode, letting the pc install the default driver and then
installing the newest driver--that hasn't worked [neither
has using the un-updated driver]. no matter what i do,
upon bootup, i have 640x480 and 16 color, then need to
reinstall the driver and restart to get the desired
result. the only difference is that now i don't get the
message stating that there is a problem--i just get
the 'undesired' resolution/colors and have to go through
the reinstall/reboot. any ideas [hope my description is
of assistance to your advice...]???

thanks,
allyson

There is one other possibility I can think of. It might be a complete red
herring, but it's worth a look. When the default display is installed, do
Start / Run / Sysedit and look in System.INI. Find the section [boot] and
the entry display.drv. What is the value for this entry?

Then reinstall the drivers and check again. Does the entry change? Shutdown
and boot to DOS. Do
EDIT C:\Windows\System.INI
and look at the entry again. What is it now?

damn, jeff--it seems every time i come to you guys with a
problem, the symptoms disappear magically 'til the
morrow!!! i just rebooted 6 times and each time it came
back to desired settings. i thought perhaps since the
first two times i shut down with 'restart' that maybe that
was the reason it didn't go back to 640x480/16 color, so i
shut down completely for the next tries--perhaps i didn't
leave the pc idle long enough or something [who knows at
this point?? lol]. so, i will either shut down and leave
it idle for quite a while and reboot tonight or tomorrow
and see what happens--then i'll try your last resort. btw-
-i checked in current mode and the value for display.drv
was pnpdrvr.drv--not that i presume that helps any. and
also, for the record, this is a compaq pentium 3 running
win98se and the display adapter driver is a trident
blade3d/mvp4[63]. the two drivers are dated 11-14-1999
and 1-19-2000, respectively [if any of that makes a
diff...]

thanks and i'll let you know what happens!!!

nope--told you--wait 'til the morrow--same problem, just
now i'm getting the 'there is a problem with the
display...' message. i checked the value--same with
default as with desired. i also tried to start in ms-dos
[just for the hell of it] and lo and behold, it would
not. just got the last screen i get right before my
desktop--it said 'c:\windows' at the bottom with the
cursor right there after the '', but i didn't know what
to do. so i hit 'enter' and it just copied
the 'c:\windows' again every time i hit 'enter'. am i
just a computard or is that not supposed to happen??
shouldn't it go into ms-dos just by going 'startshut
downrestart in ms-dos'?? i am now totally at sea...
[but i didn't have to reinstall the video adapter driver
this time--just reset the res etc. and restarted and
voila! there was my desired res/colors...]

thanks for any assistance--this is really getting weird!!

That's correct for re-starting in MS-DOS mode - you are
getting the famous DOS prompt. You can type commands at
the prompt, such as DIR, or EXIT.

I'm thinking about it, but don't hold your breath (sorry)! The pnp driver
reference is correct - it means that the driver to use is the one selected
by the PlugnPlay routine based on the fact that the device can identify
itself to Windows so that the correct drivers are used. If this was the
name of a specific driver then that would be used instead, and it might be
wrong for your hardware. Some video device driver installation routines
don't update the pnp driver entry correctly, meaning that they get replaced
with whatever the driver in the INI file is, so it appears that the
installation doesn't work.

Of course, the pnp entry means that you are relying on the pnp process to
correctly identify the device, so this might be where your problem is. If
the card is not identifying itself, or if the identification is ambiguous,
Windows might be replacing the correct driver with the one that it thinks is
correct.

There might be setting in BIOS setup related to the plug and play BIOS that
would have an effect. It would also be possible to (effectively) disable
plug and play for the video by inserting the driver reference into the INI
file. This is well into the area of experimenting, which can be risky.

Default still having vid adapter driver probs...

thanks, jeff. told you i was a computard [at least where
ms-dos is concerned]. i hadn't the slightest idea what to
do. now that i do know, i find it really funny. well,
this is how we learn, no??
anyway, since the .ini thing is risky at best, i guess i
will settle for the constant reinstallation--at least i
have a cable modem, so i can use the time for
reinstallation and imagine i'm waiting for a dial-up
connection [lol]. thanks for all the help--i'm sure i'll
have another question for you before long--thanks so much
for being here and available. it really means a lot.
well, i'm off to perhaps delve into things and investigate
to see what i might find--o, by the way--NOW, when i boot
up, the screen comes up with the default resolution, but
my desired desktop color and pattern are there--will
wonders never cease?? and i'm not getting that 'problem'
message--at least for now.

thanks again--

I'm thinking about it, but don't hold your breath

(sorry)! The pnp driver
reference is correct - it means that the driver to use is

the one selected
by the PlugnPlay routine based on the fact that the

device can identify
itself to Windows so that the correct drivers are used.

If this was the
name of a specific driver then that would be used

instead, and it might be
wrong for your hardware. Some video device driver

installation routines
don't update the pnp driver entry correctly, meaning that

they get replaced
with whatever the driver in the INI file is, so it

appears that the
installation doesn't work.

Of course, the pnp entry means that you are relying on

the pnp process to
correctly identify the device, so this might be where

your problem is. If
the card is not identifying itself, or if the

identification is ambiguous,
Windows might be replacing the correct driver with the

one that it thinks is
correct.

There might be setting in BIOS setup related to the plug

and play BIOS that
would have an effect. It would also be possible to

(effectively) disable
plug and play for the video by inserting the driver

reference into the INI
file. This is well into the area of experimenting, which

can be risky.

nope--told you--wait 'til the morrow--same problem, just
now i'm getting the 'there is a problem with the
display...' message. i checked the value--same with
default as with desired. i also tried to start in ms-

dos
[just for the hell of it] and lo and behold, it would
not. just got the last screen i get right before my
desktop--it said 'c:\windows' at the bottom with the
cursor right there after the '', but i didn't know what
to do. so i hit 'enter' and it just copied
the 'c:\windows' again every time i hit 'enter'. am i
just a computard or is that not supposed to happen??
shouldn't it go into ms-dos just by going 'startshut
downrestart in ms-dos'?? i am now totally at sea...
[but i didn't have to reinstall the video adapter driver
this time--just reset the res etc. and restarted and
voila! there was my desired res/colors...]

thanks for any assistance--this is really getting

weird!!
regards--
