Default Fatal Error 06 after Windows Update

I can't use the internet anymore, except for telnet. Every time I try to run
a browser, email or FTP program, I get a blue screen 'fatal error 06'. (The
FTP problem is especially weird since it seems to work fine, sending connect
strings and such, but right about when it asks for a file list, I get the
blue screen.)

This all started right after I downloaded the last Windows Update. I think
there were four separate items that got downloaded together in that bundle.

Can anyone help me fix this?

Jason removing and reinstalling DUN and TCP/IP.

You should also consider updating your modem drivers.

If you are running XP SP2, the following may work - run the command:

netsh winsock reset

Dear listers,

I have a sort of similar problem, in the sense of the class of error msg
i.e. fatal error 06 and BSOD. I've included the address in case someone is
able to help me.

System Dell Optiplex GX 260. OS W98SE. Networked. IE v6.

Thank you for your help and advise. My IT department was not able to help
and was suggesting recovery (i.e. reformat and restore original mirror). Out
of the blue, 'A fatal exception 06 has occured at 0000:00008058' in my
machine, 'The current application will be terminated'. It occurs at variable
interval from the time I logged in to my account on my machine, as quick as
5-10 minutes to 2 hours. It causes 'BSOD'. It occurs when I clicked on the IE
icon or if a link that I clicked opened a new window. There appear to be no
triggering factor(s) or pattern. This day 3 of the problem.

I am able to open new window via File - Window initially after the start of
the 'BSOD' and electing to terminate the current program but at some point
'BSOD' become permanent and I have to re-start or on-off. I could not googled
or KB'd my error to glean some information or to take remedial steps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you once again.

Kind regards,
bw

I have the exact problem. Every time I try to open IE, I get the blue screen
of death. "A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0032:00003E8C..." This
started after I downloaded the last Windows update. Hope someone can help.

Thanks,
John

Kindly allow me to add my BSOD story to this thread. Unlike some people are experiencing this mess, since the last Win98 Update my internet connection still establishes properly. I get the "fatal error 06" BSOD as soon as I attempt to open either IE or Firefox. Once I get the BSOD from that, I get it when I attempt to open other programs or files, e.g. the system folder. Here are the address strings for the BSOD thus far: 0000:000005B5, 0000:0000FAC6, and 0000:0000FAB2. On one and only one occasion I succeeded in getting the following messaage: "MSGSRV32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.exe at 0001:00003965." Just to experiment, I attempted to launch IE and Firefox without first establishing an internet connection, with the same BSOD result. I haven't yet experienced the BSOD except when I attempt to launch IE or Firefox.

Please help!

Thank you for letting me post, and I apologize if I violated posting protocol by interrupting another thread with this post.

thank you for sharing all these. i hope ms would not mind responding to
these. we are not after blaming it (certainly not me). i would rather they
help me resolve this so that my work would not be disrupted and i would gain
a little experience in resolving fatal error.

in the meantime if anyone stumble on the meaning of these error (explained
in understandeable technical language or better still plain english) please
to put it here. we could all learn from this.

thank you all,
bw

I must add my story to the group, in hopes that a solution will
appear...IE6.0 briefly appears and begins to load when the blue screen Fatal
error 06 appears. Hitting any key returns me to my desktop and I stay
connected. Am able to view Outlook for e-mail, but the entire system becomes
unstable quickly.

Opening IE6.0 offline results in same error messages. This all seemed to
correlate with a recent update from Microsoft.

So, how do I solve..???

i too have this problem. am not comfortable with the sandi-microsoft mvp.
response as am computer illiterate and see that it is for win 95 and 98
standard (have 98 2nd ed.). does microsoft have a patch for this that i can
get or can i somehow remove the updates. just think that since they seemed
to cause this problem they could do a bit more to correct it. am using
another computer for this message. my machine with the problem is pretty
much useless.

I too have the same error: "A fatal exception 06 has occurred at
0147:00004CB2".

This occurred after a recent critical update (security patch) from Windows
Update.

Any assistance appreciated.
