Strange Startup - Win 98 SE
Good afternoon!
After an OS reinstall (done by someone else) booting up is really irritating. I get the Compaq screen followed by a black screen with a blinkink cursor, the windows loading screen, another black screen with a blinking cursor, then the windows desktop background, THEN the icons appear and it finally finishes booting. I update and run regularly: Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, AdAware6, HJT, CWShredder, CleanUP, and Avast AV. I have pared down my start up programs through MSCONFIG, and it made no difference to the weird and slow startup. Also, before the major crash... my TS files were wiped out. I understand that MS caused this through a security patch, so I searched in the MS KB and it directed (through a link) to a DL file fix. I DL'ed in, but it was exactly the same. No files. Thank you very much in advance for any possible fixes! ~Rose ) |

Do a logged boot, and then download and run BootLog Analyser.
Set BootLog Analyser to show delays and failures, and post back with that report, along with the last few lines of the bootlog. BootLog Analyser (BLA) http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ To do a logged boot, start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. Use the arrow keys to select "Logged [/bootlog.txt]" and press Enter. For the troubleshooters problem, there are two different fixes (actually one fix and one workaround), depending on the Windows updates you have installed. The original fix for the older update was this: First, click Start Settings Folder Options View tab, and click to enable "Show All Files" and click OK. Click Start Find File or Folders, and search the C:\ drive for a file named Tshoot.inf...it should be found in the \Windows\Inf folder. Right-click Tshoot.inf and click Install on the menu that appears. If the latest cumulative patch for Internet Explorer is installed, there is only a workaround. As to booting up holding the Control Key... tried that 3 times and it just plain wouldn't do it. So, I booted up using F8, chose option 2, tried 3 times and it kept wanting me to go into Safe Mode. However, after all that, I was able to find the bootlog.txt file (dated today) throug Find F&F. Ran BLA but wasn't able to 'save' the log... tried to 3 times also. So, the only other thing I could think of to do in reply to your request was copy and paste the bootlog.txt in F&F here. (IF you say so.... It's as long as my arm!!) The log that appears in BLA is much shorter, but as I said there aren't any options to save the log as a whole. Hmmmm. What am I (or whatever else it could be) doing wrong? I will go back now and attempt your suggestions on the TS prob, and will check back here when I am finished with that, to look for your response as to if you think I should post this mile long bootlog.txt. to troubleshoot it. Thank you once again, Glee... I SO appreciate your help!! ~Rose |

BootLog Analyser (BLA) http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ The link that did work for me (Googled...lol) was: http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/pk29/ For the troubleshooters problem, there are two different fixes (actually one fix and one workaround), depending on the Windows updates you have installed. Fantastic, Glee, Thank You!! I used the TS workaround (the DL executable) and I've got TS back! Woo Hoo! I'll check back at various times throughout the day to see if you've had a chance to reply to the BLA issue I reply posted earlier. Have a great day, and thanks again for your assistance! ~Rose |

Do a logged boot, then in Windows, start BLA, check the Sow Delays and Show Failures boxes, then click the File menu Save As.
