I have run it on XP SP3, and it works. Not that impressed with the
initial version however. Perhaps it will improve over time.

I suggest you ask in one or more Open Source programming communities.

Have you tried contacting Google about it and asking in a Google group about
this if this is the browser you want for Windows 98. Anyway, it is still in
beta and should be only run on test systems because it has vulnerabilities
according to DHS.

http://www.us-cert.gov/current/

Information graciously provided by the Department of Homeland Security
web-site:

Google Chrome Download Vulnerability
added September 3, 2008 at 01:52 pm

US-CERT is aware of a vulnerability that affects the Google Chrome web
browser. This vulnerability is due to a default configuration that allows
files to be downloaded without prompting the user. In addition, downloaded
files can be opened with a single click, which could allow a user to
inadvertently open a malicious file.

US-CERT encourages users to enable the "Ask where to save each file before
downloading" option within the "Minor Tweaks" tab in the browser preferences.
Although this does not fix the underlying vulnerability, selecting this
option will warn the user before files are downloaded. Users should still
exercise caution when visiting and downloading items from untrusted websites.

US-CERT will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Philo, I find it amazing now how much more reliant people are on their web
browsers than their actual operating systems. This really does seem to be a
recent shift from the past when the operating system was king.
