Removing Norton Anti-Virus 2005 from Windows 98 and errors
I have posted some questions before and received information (from Gary
Terhune) and I have tried everything he suggested about removing the program. Nothing works, the icon and program are still on the computer and it won't let me uninstall or delete it. What can I do now? I am at my wits end and I just want to get rid of Norton Anti-Virus 2005, get my money back, etc. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you! |

They did for AV 2002. You might try that. However, they will tell you it removes everything except the subscription information so you can't re-install it and get another year of updates. To remove that information is a little tricky. Using the un-installer, if they have one for 2005, may be all you need for your purpose. I removed everything just for kicks on a machine that came with it but doesn't use the Net. Reinstalled it and got a new subscription date. Then removed it all. After un-installing from Add/Remove Programs I searched the Registry for NAV, Symantec, Norton and 2002. Removed those then did the same with the HD. There were Symantec files in the C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Symantec folder with names starting with the date, e.g 20021020 (Oct 20). The un-install did not remove that folder. I use AVG Anti-virus. Try the Web site. Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ |

Have you tried performing all the suggested steps in Safe Mode? I know that the
list of procedures for removing NAV2005 is rather intricate, but by now you should have everything that you need already downloaded to your system, so you won't need internet access. Safe Mode might just release those items that have been thus far locked. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "kwrchs" wrote in message ... Regards, Bill Watt Computer Help and Information http://home.epix.net/~bwatt/ Mr. Watts, There is uninstalling information on Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus) website for Norton Anti-Virus 2005 if the Add/Remove on the computer does not work which it didn't. I did everything they suggested and it still won't uninstall. Now, I don't know what to do because since it isn't working, I would like my money back. Do you have anymore suggestions? Thanks. |

Gary,
In answer to your question, no I haven't tried removing NAV2005 in Safe Mode. I will try that today and hope that works. I will try anything to get rid of NAV2005. Will let you know what happens. Again, thanks! "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: Have you tried performing all the suggested steps in Safe Mode? What is really amazing to me is that a program *this intrusive* can STILL
stay on the market. You would have thought "the word" would have gotten out by now. What gives???? kwrchs wrote: Gary, In answer to your question, no I haven't tried removing NAV2005 in Safe Mode. Use Windows Explorer to locate and delete all of the folders relating to NAV 2005 and their contents. On Windows 98 you should look in the \Windows and \Program Files folders subfolders with Norton or Symantec in their names. 2. Get a Registry Cleaner (I use RegSeeker (free) from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html) and run it to remove obsolete and invalid items from the registry, which will now include references to the deleted Symantec files. If you use RegSeeker you will probably have to run it 2 or 3 times in succession in order to clean up everything. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
