Default Need new anti-virus software

Hi! Norton A-V came installed on my computer and I used
to renew it once a year. After Gateway reformatted my
hard drive I had to buy new A-V software and I purchased &
installed Norton 2004. It has been nothing but trouble
since the first day, despite many uninstalls, reinstalls
and another hard drive reformat. Symantec is working with
me via e-mail to try to resolve the problems but they are
just too numerous and I'm sick of it; this has been an
ongoing problem since October 2003. It causes so many
errors, etc. that I'm running with no anti-virus
protection right now. So to finally get to my question:
Can anyone recommend a good anti-virus program other than
Norton? I'd probably be better off buying the software on
CD instead of downloading something because of my slow,
dial-up connection. I really appreciate any advice -
thanks!!

In the last independent testing that I read, Norton Antivirus (which I
use) detected (that's detected, not eradicated) 95% of the in-the-wild
viruses. While that might not sound great, all but 2 AV products were
95% or lower. The KAV-engined products got into the 99% detection
range: Kaspersky and NOD32. However, as I recall, those 2 were also the
slower scanners (that's for the manual scanning, not for the
auto-protect or online scanner). As I hear, they aren't the most user
friendly, either, but ease-of-use and security have always been the
antithesis of each other. I don't remember where I read the test
results but the search for the report probably started with a search
from http://www.eicar.org/ or http://www.wildlist.org/.

My NAV subscription runs out in May 2005. At that time, I probably
won't be sticking with Symantec's anti-virus and firewall products. The
KAV-engined products are probably what I'll get (probably Kaspersky) but
it depends on what is considered best at that time. I was almost going
to get rid of Norton's firewall (Norton Internet Security) because it is
such a resource hog (115MB just for NIS) until I found out it was
because they load their huge categorization table into memory if you
have Parental Control enabled. On a reinstall, I skipping the Parental
Control feature (so it's not even available) although that it the only
way in the product to perform URL filtering.

Hi,
I too installed Norton 2004 back in January when my
NAV2001 expired.
I too had endless problems. I removed mine and returned it
to Symantec for a full refund of the purchase price on the
basis that it was not fit for the purpose it was sold. Yes
it claims to be suitable for WinME, and no, it's not.

I then took some sage advice from this newsgroup and
downloaded AVG 6 Free Edition antivirus from
www.grisoft.com and kept the change. It works fine with
WinME.
I also downloaded Zonealarm from www.zonelabs.com for a
firewall. It is also free for home use, and it works OK
with WinME.
Zonelabs user forum seems to show that their latest free
firewall (V5) is not as good as their previous free one
(V4.5)
You can get 4.5 from here

eleaseHistory.html

Good luck.

Vickie
Have been using Avast!, a free AV program for two years, without any
problems whatsoever. If interested, visit www.avast.com

Hi Vickie,

I went through the same thing you're going through. I
hate Norton because it just uses too many of your
computer's resources. I've switched to Panda and I love
it! You can go directly to the Panda site by going to
http://www.pandasoftware.com or if you'd rather purchase
the CD (which I recommend), try looking into one of the
Yahoo stores for it, which you could probably get it for
about $19. I'm really not sure the price for the
software because I've had it for about 2 years now. It's
the easiest AV I've ever used and instead of updating once
or twice a week, it's done every day. Look into it...and
good luck.
