Default DirectX 9.0c Graphic Adaptors/Drivers

I was downloading The Sims 2 and everything was going smoothly until an error
message popped up saying "Failed to find DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics
adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a Direct X 9.0c
compatible graphics adapter and the latest drivers provided by the
manufacturer. The application will now terminate." Well, I figured it must
be that I have an outdated Direct X, so I downloaded the Direct X 9.0c from
microsoft, but when I did I still have the same problem. Please, if someone
has any suggestions, email me at . Thank you!

What the message indicates is that your video adapter needs updating in =
order to run DirectX 9 and the game. You may or may not be able to get =
drivers for your video that are compatible.

The message isn't dissing your version of DirectX.
It is dissing your video card or on-board video chip.
Maybe also your memory and CPU and OS combination.

You will need to upgrade to a DirectX 9.0c-compatible
video card to run that game.

Check ALL of the system requirements before you buy one.

You may also need a faster CPU, more memory, a bigger hard drive etc.

OR a new computer.

Google for this search term to read all about it

Troubleshooting Video Problems in Windows

"START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". If checked, then uncheck "VGA
640x480x16", & reboot.

"Control Panel, Display, Settings tab". Select as you wish from the
Colors dropdown menu & the Size slider. Really, you should need nothing
higher than "High Color (16 bit)", for speed/resource considerations.

If you move the Screen Area slider to 1024x768 there, be sure to click
the Advanced button, & select Large fonts.

Try to get your colors/size at least twice that way. If it continues to
fail, you may need to reinstall your Monitor or Display Adapter...

For the Monitor...
(1) Boot to Safe Mode
(Hold F5 as you boot or CTRL for the Startup Menu)
(2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(3) Open the Monitors branch, & Remove all entries.

Perhaps, FIRST, even in Normal Mode, note what is installed
similar to below for the Adapter. That is...
(a) D-Clk the monitor there for Properties, Driver tab.
(b) Click the Update Driver button, then "Next".
(c) Bolt "Display a list...", & click "Next".
(d) Bolt "Show all hardware".
Examine the two panes to see what is currently installed.
That is likely what you wish to end up with, after step (4).

(4) Boot to Normal Mode.

Hopefully, it will be rediscovered & installed. Then, if still
necessary, here is the rigmarole of the Display Adapter...

.......Quote..........
The first thing to do is to remove the video adapter you have
installed. Right-click on the desktop; choose "Properties" from the
drop-down menu; select "Settings;" click on the "Advanced" button; and
click on "Adapter". An adapter is a program that tells Windows how to
deal with a specific video card. Make note of the adapter that is
currently installed. Then, change the adapter to "Standard Display
Adapter (VGA)" and restart the system.

[That is: Click "Change, Next, bolt 'Display a List...', Next, bolt
'Show all hardware', scroll left pane to top, select '(Standard display
types)', select 'Standard Display Adapter (VGA)' in right pane, click
'Next'"... PCR]

This will remove the current adapter and replace it with a generic VGA
adapter that works with all video cards. You will not like VGA because
it supports only 16 colors, but the purpose of installing it is to get
rid of whatever was there before.

Next, return to the adapter screen and install an adapter that matches
your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are
using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to
see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct
video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an
adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that
made your video card.

.......End....of quote....

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

Just a few days ago I was able to update the graphic adapter drivers on my
old HP Pavilion 8380 ( Windows 98). The display adapter is a Rage Pro Turbo
AGP ( ATI). The update was made available in 2002 but I only now found a
need and more importantly, the nerve to try the update. This update was not
available through HP. I had to go directly to the maker of the video card.
I had Direct X 9 and then 9 installed but they never really functioned.
After the update things are working great and dxdiag tells me that DirectX 9
is now working. If I could find an update for this old machine perhaps your
can find one for yours - at least there is hope.

You card graphics adapter doesn't really support directX9. the driver has a
responce in it that makes the directX9 features render in software mode
instead of directly with hardware. I'm only mentioning this because with
this type of compatability you won't experience the direct benefit of having
a directX9 aplication running. Most should work but might be a little slower
then if rendered directly from the video card. My uunderstaning is that the
major differences between directX9 and 8 is basicaly the ability to do
shading and a couple other festure directly thru the video card instead of
software rendering then piping the resulting display out to the video
adapter.

Of couse if your using a Rage Pro Turbo, you arent probably playing many
games that would use the directX9 feature anyways. You might want to think
about upgrading to a used gforce 2 or radion (or better) if you can. They
should be verry cheap and should give you the feeling of having a new
computer when playing some of the modern games. One of the bigest
advancments in windows gaming was letting the grapgics card do alot of the
work that the proccessor usually does when playing a game. also the Gfoce 2
(and radion i think)cards will have a built in dvd decoder chip making
wathing dvds a littler more enjoyable. It is just a thought.

The Ati Radeon do have a built in DVD decoder, jazz. I know because I own a
Ati Radeon 9200 AGP with 128 mb's of video ram. Personally, I like Ati
graphics cards much better than Nvidia G-Force because I tried an Nvidia
once and it trashed my system even though I had reverted to default VGA
graphics driver and completely removed the old driver. To this day, I do
not know what went wrong but that is ancient history. (about a year ago :)

I hear what you are saying. However, most of the problems I've run into
with playing games is that my entire system is just not big enough and fast
enough. A case in point: For Xmas my daughter received SimCity4 which is
compatible with Windows 98. However, closer inspection reveals it requires
500 MHz and Pentium III or AMD Athion. I have 400 MHz and Pentium II. The
game doesn't work on my computer. If I were to upgrade it would probably be
to replace the entire system - computer, scanner, printer, etc. However, my
bank account tells me this will have to wait. In the mean time if my video
card should go belly up I will definitely keep your post in mind. Thanks,
Lois

Another consideration could be a video game console because the price is a
lot easier on the wallet if only games are the concern. :

My son has an X-box which he loves. The computer becomes my daughter's
second choice because it's so hard to get her brother off the X-box. We
muddle along here fairly well as long as no one gets any unrealistic
expectations about what this old computer can do. Anyway, it gives them
just one more thing to fight about. Oh, the joys of parenthood!
