Default Mshta has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL

When I try to run an update to HP Software for a new
printer I just bought I get the following message
Mshta has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL
Mshta will now close If you continue to experience
problems try restarting your computer
I contacted HP they said it was a Microsoft problem
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software 4 times,
cleared out my temporary files, restarted the system
several times and still get this error
I appreciate any advice you could provide

I wonder..... (i.e. this is a guess - please let me know the results!)
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mca...rt/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe
http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

See if that helps

Oh well - it was a guess, as I said.....
let's do a little detective work, then.
Download Belarc Advisor from www.belarc.com
install and run it - then copy the information from the 'Installed Microsoft
Hotfixes' area to your response.

Do a Search for files named MSHTA - there should be at least one found (in
the C:\Widows\System folder) - r-click on it, select Properties, and make a
note of the version number. Post that in your response.

What version of IE are you using?

Have you reinstalled ME over itself recently? (DON'T!! - it often makes
problems worse rather than better, if you do it the wrong way!!)

That's one heck of a list of updates you have there!
All seems to be in order, although I'm surprised to see so many superseded
patches in the list (mine is a lot shorter, possibly as a result of using
the Security CD a number of times)
The MSHTA version is the correct one - and the same as mine.
We would seem to have eliminated the obvious so.....
run a repair of IE
Reboot to Safe Mode
Go to Add/Remove Programs and try a repair of Internet Explorer from there.
Go to the entry for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Internet Tools'
in Add/Remove Programs
Click on Remove - and click on Repair on the window that pops up
Reboot on request to Normal Mode

If the above entry isn't there, you first need to uninstall all the patches
applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches
The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the names 'Internet Explorer
Qxxxxxx'
highlight, click Remove - reboot if requested.
Repeat until the MSIE6SP1 entry appears - then repair as above.

You'll obviously need to reinstall the removed patches afterwards!

if that doesn't fix it, then what is the version number of KERNEL32.DLL??

Hmm - that's correct, also.....
It may be worth extracting new copies from the CAB files - kernel32.dll is
in the WIN_11.CAB -

MSHTA.EXE will be a little more difficult to replace, as it's the newer
version - you'd probably best do this one by reinstalling the latest update

that
pops up
Reboot on request to Normal Mode

If the above entry isn't there, you first need to

uninstall all the patches
applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches
The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the

names 'Internet Explorer
Qxxxxxx'
highlight, click Remove - reboot if requested.
Repeat until the MSIE6SP1 entry appears - then repair

as
above.

You'll obviously need to reinstall the removed patches

afterwards!

if that doesn't fix it, then what is the version number

of KERNEL32.DLL??

Default Mshta has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL

Noel,
Should I do the reinstall from Safe Mode?

-----Original Message-----
Hmm - that's correct, also.....
It may be worth extracting new copies from the CAB files -

kernel32.dll is
in the WIN_11.CAB -

MSHTA.EXE will be a little more difficult to replace, as

it's the newer
version - you'd probably best do this one by reinstalling

the latest update
for it.....
which is IE6SP1
If the Repair didn't work, then use the reinstall option,

and see if that
improves things

Noel,
I will try the repair that you suggested tomorrow
anyway my version of KERNEL32.DLL is 4.90.0.3000

-----Original Message-----
That's one heck of a list of updates you have there!
All seems to be in order, although I'm surprised to see

so many superseded
patches in the list (mine is a lot shorter, possibly

as a
result of using
the Security CD a number of times)
The MSHTA version is the correct one - and the same as

mine.
We would seem to have eliminated the obvious so.....
run a repair of IE
Reboot to Safe Mode
Go to Add/Remove Programs and try a repair of Internet

Explorer from there.
Go to the entry for 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1

and Internet Tools'
in Add/Remove Programs
Click on Remove - and click on Repair on the window

that
pops up
Reboot on request to Normal Mode

If the above entry isn't there, you first need to

uninstall all the patches
applied, then do the repair, then reapply the patches
The patches are listed in Add/Remove under the

names 'Internet Explorer
