The safest way to password protect your computer in 98/98SE is via the BIOS, as far as logon as type it can be bypassed via clicking "Cancel". The user type of logon serves basically for appearance only not for data protection. -- Sincerely, | (©) (©) | ------ooo--(_)--ooo------ Andrew H. Carter | /// \\\ d(-_-)b | |

I don't do email support and you really should not ask for it. When a
response is posted in the newsgroup, a lot of people are going to review it and make sure that the answer is correct or at least that it will not do any harm to your PC. When you get an email, no one can review it to ensure it has good information. Finally, when you use a valid email address in a public newsgroup, chances are you are going to get tons of spam and emails with a virus attached. Password.cpl is the file that should be in your Windows/system folder. You can see if it is missing or if present, double click it to see what happens. It is a standard W98 file that you can extract from your CD to the Windows/System folder using sfc.exe. Run sfc.exe and select the "extract one file..." option. Type in the complete name of the missing file you want to restore or use the browse button for a file replacement. Click start and in the resulting window, browse to the location of the folder containing the W98 .cab files (either the hard drive or CDRom drive). If the information in the "save in" box is wrong, use the browse button to show where the file is to be restored to. Click OK and if appropriate, on the resulting screen, show the location where the file being replaced is to be backed up to. Click OK or skip as appropriate. Restart your computer and the file replacement will occur during the boot process. If you are going to use sfc.exe for other than the extract option, I highly recommend that you first read the article he http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html ********* Establishing a password has no real effect--clicking on the cancel button will get you into Windows. MVP Doug Knox has a security procedure on his web site: http://www.dougknox.com Click "Security" and then "Prevent Unauthorized Users from accessing your computer." As an alternative, your BIOS may have password protection for startup. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "B.
