Default Older flash player for W2K?

While I'm currently running W2K, I hope you can answer this flash
question, as there seems to be some flash experience here.

This was a past W98 post I was sent from a friend:
----
Also I'll add it's also advisable to use the latest updated v7 of Flash
and not v8 for W98 since I've seen v8 not working well with W98 with lots
of ActiveX problems - which is specifically why they offer this latest
just security updated released version v7r63 - which you can directly
download the installer right from this link he
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/f.../r63/flashplay
er7r63_winax.exe
..if you want you can read the information about that special version
he http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/kn...ase/index.cfm?
id=d9c2fe33

Now here's the direct download to the very latest security updated
Shockwave (???) version that works well with W98:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get...ish/win95nt/10
..1.1.016/Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe
..if you want you can read about it he
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/...ownload.cgi?P1
_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFull&P2_Platform=Win32&P3_B rowser_Version=MSIE^5.6
MEG
----

I installed this, install went OK. But I find I have to go online to the
Adobe site to set preferences on my hard drive, I don't like that. And I
ran a game and it said Macromedia flash was not present.

All this is to simply run some games that need flash on my hard drive. I
don't need flash for anything online, only offline.

I installed older flash ver. 4 and 5, both of them on install ask for
"netscape.exe", long gone from my computer.

I need a older, not so invasive version of flash player just for offline
games, that will install in W2K.

Advice?

TIA

It's just the way it is with them in order to set 'some' of the preferences
and what you have to do - even with the older versions it was no different
so don't think it was.

Be sure to turn off the Automatic updates, etc, so you do get any unwanted
surprises for versions. Once you do that, they you can go check what
versions you have at this link, but again don't let it auto install stuff,
just use it to tell you what you have is all.. imho
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

..yes true they make it convoluted the way you have to check/do things.
Anyway, with the links that you quoted which it was me who has previously
posted them, and if you have those specific ones installed then this is a
screenshot of what it should say:
http://img303.imageshack.us/img303/8...1011r161dr.gif
..and is one way you can check what versions you have installed.

ran a game and it said Macromedia flash was not present.

If the first link above says you do then you do, however, if the game
requires v8 of flash then it may prompt it doesn't if it's not installed;
but v8 is not something I recommend for 9x since this is a 9x forum, but I
haven't yet tested v8 on W2K since the versions given suit my needs just
fine.

All this is to simply run some games that need flash on my hard drive. I

Yes but that's just the way it is then if some games requires flash to run
them. Many people have a love/dislike relationship with Flash/Shockwave

Check to see what are the Flash version requirements of that Game you have,
to make sure an older version of flash is supported, and what version it
requires and that will be your answer.

Speaking of older versions of Flash, remember even if you only use it
offline, unless you turn ActiveX off for the Internet Zone it will still
be on, and so if you go to sites and they use Flash\Shockwave, and you
installed an older security compromised version of them, then you are open
to the possibility of security risk (if you go to sites that exploits it)

Thanks, after reading your good answer, I may just not use games that
require flash. It seems to require just the opposite of all the careful
rules I've followed over the years about surfing the web.

Understood and agree, and there's not many more a buff about that than me;
but having said that, I have it installed myself but I do have a command
over what it does or doesn't do and what I let it do, etc.. I must admit I
don't care for games that much for it, but there are some flash websites or
things that I may want or need to see since that's the only way some offer
a product or convenience, or especially if helping others with it makes it
so I need to have it installed myself. As far as on the Internet though I
never have ActiveX on anyway (unless it's one of a few sites I put in the
trusted zone)

Sorry if slightly off topic here, but you bringing up games reminded me of
a funny (and sometimes appropriate satire) ditty made using flash:

Windows RG (really good edition)
...I've always thought it is such a hoot...
....after it starts - click through the different icons and prompts on it..

I went into IE and backed out all the ActiveX settings I had enabled for
flash, then I went to the test site you mentioned in your other reply. I
saw a fixed display. In Firefox, I then enabled Javascript, images and
popups, reloaded the page, it was a smaller version of the same.

Maybe cancelling ActiveX determined my result, dunno, but I will
uninstall flash player as not my cup of tea.

It has 883 registry entries, not invasive or anything!

Computing is a learning experience. Operating very conservative, in a
recent install of W98SE on my old computer, I ran for 3 months with NO
patches, no problems. I plan in W2K to stop at SP4.

Thanks for the help,

Mike
