Is there any advantage or disadvantage in getting a new PC with an AMD
Athlon 64 rather than an Intel Pentium 4 HT?
Regards Mike.

If you're a gamer in XP, then yes - I believe that most games are nowadays
being optimised for the AMD. (also, you can install the 64-bit version of XP
and take advantage of the new software when/as it comes out)

BUT in Win ME, I doubt that you'd see any real difference in performance.

AMD's aren't just for gamers. You get far more bang for your bucks with
AMD at current price levels but suspect that we will see Intel bouncing
back later this year. Personally I wouldn't bother trying to install any
Win 9x system on a box running a modern processor since I suspect few
modern chipsets have the necessary drivers and modern cpus need modern
chipsets and motherboards.

Cheers, I'm just toying with the idea of buying a new PC, but the ones I
looked at come with XP.
Regards Mike.

You didn't tell us the Intel processor number so it's hard to say what
advantages one might have over the other. With the information that you
provided an absolute known is that the AMD would be capable of running
Windows 64 bit, the Intel might or might not be able to do so, we need
to know the processor number to determine that. Other than that it's a
bit of a toss up for average pc users, it most often boils down to cost
or other features and bundled software offered by one suppliers over the
other.

If you need this machine to be upgradeable later on then pay close
attention to the motherboard offered by the different vendors. A great
or even good chip on a $30 motherboard isn't much of a bargain. Intel
chips on Intel boards are easy to shop for and are a safe bet that they
will be well matched. AMD suitable boards are harder to match properly.
Also, there are different sockets for these chips, try to get the
latter socket design if possible. The Athlon 64 is available on Socket
754 or
Socket 939 design, get the 939 if you can. If you carefully select a
good socket 939 motherboard you will have good future upgradeability,
from dual core Athlons all the way up to Opteron processors on higher
end boards. You will have to verify the socket design for the Intel on
their web site.

I agree with you, Mike, I've been a fan of AMD for a number of years now -
since the first Athlons came out, really - and currently use a Sempron 3000+
(32-bit) on this box.... next upgrade (after a lappy, when I can afford it)
is to 64-bit AMD, unless Intel come up with something spectacular (which
doesn't seem to be anywhere close, ATM!).

With all else being equal, the AMD processor will give you more bang for the
buck, better performance in most disciplines, and as a 64-bit processor will
be positioned to benefit from the emerging 64-bit operating systems.

The P4 HT processor is a fair processor as long as you understand its
limitations.
