See the post titled Product Key for info on how to find it.
It was dated 17Dec04 and it was posted by Saurus.
Just borrow any Win98CD that is the same as your sister's original (complete
install retail, upgrade install, etc)
She should be able to fix the problem without having to reinstall Win98.
If you post more of her exact problems, perhaps someone will have the answer.
She could try one of the free 'online' virus scans:
"Online Antivirus scanners:
--------------------------
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hous...start_corp.asp
http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp

She probably should install the free programs called AdAware and SpyBot.
If you can get her to a C:\ prompt, she can try using scanreg /fix command.
Have her do it several times in a row.

Can someone help me find a Win 98 disk? I'm trying to help a long distance
sister who's system is crashing and I think the only thing we can do is
reinstall Win98, but she says she doesn't have a disk.
Anyone know how we can get one? Or in place of one what to do about corrupt
registry entries, and horrible startup probs? She's now got corrupt
antivirus program, registry, etc. I told her sounds like a virus but she says
it was ok on the scan yesterday. Thanks, ssteph.

Could you tell me what the "scanreg/fix" command does? I never had a '98
system and am not familiar with that command and I know she isn't either.
Thanks for your helpful suggestions. ssteph

I guess I should not assume people will at least SAVE or PRINT out
directions. Oh well - here it is again. This time ... SAVE IT!

So, you have your Windows 98/Millennium disk but can't find the 25 character
alpha-numeric code that allowed for the installation of Windows. If you
cannot find your product key, it is easily located in the registry of
Windows. Just follow these steps:

Open the start menu
Press enter on run
Type the words "regedit" without the quotations
Use the down arrow to locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Press the right arrow to expand the list of options within the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.
Use the down arrow to locate Software
Once again, expand the tree view through the use of the right arrow
use the down arrow to locate Microsoft
Expand the view with the right arrow
Use the down arrow to locate Windows
Expand the view with the right arrow
Press enter on Current Version
Press F6 to move to the other side of the display
use the down arrow to locate Productkey
Just to the right of "Productkey," you will find the 25 character
alpha-numeric code for your copy of Windows

OR... download the file from here to do it for you!

Thank you for the info. Fyi, I do know how to save AND print and had already
done both. I was just asking for an explaination of something else. Thank
you for your time and assistance.
