Default sound playback problems

Running Windows 98SE and cannot hear any sounds pc is supposed to make. eg.
no annoying windows sounds, also no music or game sounds. However can listen
to music if i play direct from cd player through basic media player.
Have uninstalled and re installed Current Winamp and windows Media player9
and still no joy!!!! Players respond as though they are playing but no sound.

Everything was previously working fine till I added USB ports.
Anyone got any suggestions other than remove usb ports???

You have, of course done one, preferably two, cold reboots.

yes have done several reboots and also tried moving sound card into different
slots on motherboard. Each time , Windows detects the new hardware and re
installs the appropriate drivers etc.

also Winamp only plays for 1 sec before halting. media player 9 plays as
though nothing is wrong except there is no sound.
