Default Help - My W98SE freezes up

I have often seen free software on those magazine cd discs you can ge
that you can install and it apparently checks your memory and tries t
sniff out memory leaks. Are those programs any good or do they just us
up yet more memory?

I was just wondering with regards to virtual memory probs, could the
be
caused by a specific program?-

Yes.
-
I'm asking on behalf of myself as I have
had that sort of error problem but only when using certain programs.

Richard G. Harper Wrote:-
Yep.

Windows 98 and Windows XP use vastly different memory management
methods
with the same base theory - "Cache as much data and program code in
memory
as you can but be prepared to dump the older stuff as needed."

Tips that work in Windows XP won't work in Windows 98 and vice-vers
-
except, of course, the time-honored "Add more memory!" :-)

Need help - suffering from Virtual Memory problem (SP2)

In which he describes his problem whereby virtual memory is gobbled
up
until eventually his WXP system fails (freezes).
I find that my W98SE system will be sitting idle for an hour or two
with only the desktop displayed, and very few backgroun
applications
running, at which time my system freezes up requiring me to power
down
and reboot.

I can find no virtual memory controls similar to the dynamic he
describes in his WXP. Certainly nothing like the Task Manager
'commit
charge' he mentions. Nor do I find LIBUPDAT in the W98 Task Manager
Window. But then, the W98 Task Manager only shows applications I
think. All I find is that my virtual memory is set to use up full
free HDD space, or at least that is how I interpret things.

I do find two registry entries involving LIBUPDAT, like

[Hkey Current
User]]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explore r\Doc Find
Spec MRU with LIBUPDATE.EXE, but I don't know if I should delet
them
or if they are even my problem.

Does anyone have anything to say on this?

Those magic memory freeing programs are all pure unadutlerated
crapware that are totally incapable of performing any beneficial
purpose for any computer under any circumstances.

For a more technical evaluation of them see

Good luck

Try to fix Windows 98 problems by applying solutions or procedures
intended for Windows XP is like trying to repair a helicopter using
the technical manuals for a 747.

Your Windows 98 problems require a Windows 98 solution. Based on
what you have described so far I would list the following possible
suspects:

- video drivers. Get the latest Windows 98 drivers from your video
card manufacturer's web site and install them.
- spyware. Go to MVP Jim Eshelman's Spyware Quick Fix page at
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm and follow *all* of the steps
described their to check and clean your system.

There are other possible causes but let's get the two biggies out of
the way first. If the problem persists then we can delve into the
matter further.

Good luck
