Norton Anti-Virus

Hi,

I have been repeatedly told that Norton Anti-Virus causes more problems than
it cures.

What is a good alternative? I would prefer freeware with regularly updated
virus definition files available for download.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I use AVG and have not had any problems. free.grisoft.com or searh for avg on

I like avast! by ALWIL Software. It's free (although there is a pay-for
version), it's updated daily and sometimes more than once a day. It has
never given me any trouble and I believe it is pretty highly regarded. My
only complaint is that it takes forever to do a full file virus scan.

This brings to mind an old joke - "Nothing works better than Anadin - So use
Nothing!"

It's very nearly true with Norton - just change 'anything' for 'nothing'!!

There is no application more destructive to ME systems than Norton, as
evidenced by the history of these groups - *almost* anything else would be
an improvement, althoug I would tend to steer clear of that other denizen of
the High Street retailer, McAfee, as it tends to suffer from similar bloat
and invasion capabilities - although it has much more respect for the system
generally than does Norton.

My personal preference is for AVG - it's free (unless you decide to upgrade
to the paid version), effective (AFAICT - it's a little difficult to tell,
because they use their own naming conventions, and refuse to join many of
the 'clubs' that more commercial vendors are members of), and has never
caused me or any of the machines I've installed it on any problems, whatever
Windows OS I've put it on (although it doesn't install happily yet into
Vista, I think that's Vista's problem rather than AVG's - once it's in, it
seems to run happily there).

files from my ME machine..

Whatcha wanna bet there are still some Norton files lurking in the depths of
your machine??? With regard to the freebie, you won't go wrong with either
AVG or Avast! (I did notice, recently, that AVG was only catching about
half of the WMF exploit viruses, whereas, Avast! scored 100%, along with
others). Of course, a lot of that may have been the testing facility
itself. I still think AVG is just fine....my daughter uses it and has never
had a prob.

H - I think that AVG uses its own naming scheme - and some of the exploits
that other AV companies are describing as two exploits are covered in the
same 'bracket' by AVG - certainly I mailed a couple of samples of obviously
different files to them the other day, and they came back after the update
with the same 'virus' tag.
I'm by no means certain that the samples tested by the sites you saw were
either 'different exploits' or validated by anyone else.

Yep, that is why I qualified the statement with the comment on the 'testing
facility.' Just because it is on the Net, doesn't make it so........by a
