Default HELP! i accidentally deleted windows and i dont know what to do

i was cleaning out some old programs in My Computer and i
think i sent the windows program to the recycle bin. then
my computer froze so i restarted and it wouldnt turn on.
it went to a black screen that reads:

"The following file is missing or corrupted: WIN.COM"

then there is one of these things:

c:\

and then it reads:

"Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading Windows"

it ends with another c:\ and a blinking _ where i guess u
can type?
i typed a couple random letters in and hit enter and it
then read "Bad command or file name"

i really dont know how to fix this...i think i just nee to
find away to get back in to the main screen so i can
restore all the files in the recylce bin but i dont know
how...if u can help PLEASE do...im desparate! thanks

Go back to that C:\ prompt and type "dir /p"
Look and see if there is a directory called "windows"
I think it is unlikely that you sent the whole directory (folder) to the
recycle bin.
Report back. If the folder is there, then you may just be missing the
win.com file. It's happened to me already. I just copied win.com off
another computer to a floppy and copied it to the one that didn't have
it. And everything was OK.
Report back whether or not the windows directory is still there.

On the computer that works put in a floppy disk.
In My Computer or Windows Explorer, open the windows folder and find
"win.com". Right click it and click "copy".
Then right click your "A:" drive and click "paste".
You now have it on your floppy.
On the other computer with the problem. Turn it on and wait till you get
past the error to the C:\ prompt. Then insert the floppy disk.
Then type "cd windows". Your prompt should now say "C:\Windows
Then type "copy a:win.com"
That should do it. Good luck!

There is a file WIN.CNF in Win98_25.cab
(Win98SE Cd) extract it and rename it
Win.com. Place it in Windows folder
and reboot.

It sounds like Win.com was missing indeed, as only the second time did
DOS speak of "overwrite". Therefore...

Boot to Windows. Get there?
(If still at DOS, "CTRL-Alt-Del" to Windows.)

| i dont get what u want me to do... what is DOS?
| u want me just to restart with CTRL-Alt-Del?
|
| -----Original Message-----
| It sounds like Win.com was missing indeed, as only the
| second time did
| DOS speak of "overwrite". Therefore...
|
| Boot to Windows. Get there?
| (If still at DOS, "CTRL-Alt-Del" to Windows.)

| | On the computer that works put in a floppy disk.
| | In My Computer or Windows Explorer, open the windows
| | folder and find
| | "win.com". Right click it and click "copy".
| | Then right click your "A:" drive and click "paste".
| | You now have it on your floppy.
| | On the other computer with the problem. Turn it on and
| | wait till you get
| | past the error to the C:\ prompt. Then insert the
| floppy
| | disk.
| | Then type "cd windows". Your prompt should now
| | say "C:\Windows
| | Then type "copy a:win.com"
| | That should do it. Good luck!

| | ok i put in dir/p and a long list popped up and
| windows
| | was on the list with dir after it so i am assuming
| | that
| | you were right and i only deleted the win.com
| file...if
| | that is the case then i do have another computer
| that i
| | could probably copy from i just dont know
| how...thanks
| | so
| | much for ur help so far and being patient with me
| as
| i
| | am
| | sort of computer illiterate!

| | Go back to that C:\ prompt and type "dir /p"
| | Look and see if there is a directory
| called "windows"
| | I think it is unlikely that you sent the whole
| | directory
| | (folder) to the
| | recycle bin.
| | Report back. If the folder is there, then you may
| just
| | be missing the
| | win.com file. It's happened to me already. I just
| | copied
| | win.com off
| | another computer to a floppy and copied it to the
| one
| | that didn't have
| | it. And everything was OK.
| | Report back whether or not the windows directory is
| | still
| | there.

| | i was cleaning out some old programs in My
| Computer
| | and
| | i
| | think i sent the windows program to the recycle
| bin.
| | then
| | my computer froze so i restarted and it wouldnt
| turn
| | on.
| | it went to a black screen that reads:
| |
| | "The following file is missing or corrupted:
| WIN.COM"
| |
| | then there is one of these things:
| |
| | c:\
| |
| | and then it reads:
| |
| | "Cannot find WIN.COM, unable to continue loading
| | Windows"
| |
| | it ends with another c:\ and a blinking _ where i
| | guess u
| | can type?
| | i typed a couple random letters in and hit enter
| and
| | it
| | then read "Bad command or file name"
| |
| | i really dont know how to fix this...i think i
| just
| | nee
| | to
| | find away to get back in to the main screen so i
| can
| | restore all the files in the recylce bin but i
| dont
| | know
| | how...if u can help PLEASE do...im desparate!
