Default Pcmcia boot disk

Hi:
I have a toshiba notebook computer( about 2 years old)
I have a pcmcia card install that have two
usb2 outputs. (the card bus is 32-bits)
One of the output I have go to a usb2 enclosure
with a hard drive in it.

My OS is Win98.
I am using this external hard drive for my backup files.
In Win98 everything work fine.

What I need is a boot disk that can access the external
hard drive. Any ideas how I can find one?
Try doing a search on googles but no luck.
There is nothing in the cmoss about the PCMCIA card or external Hard Drive.

Any help would be appreciated
Thank you:
Ed

Default Pcmcia boot disk

Hi Chris:
I believe that you are right.
Been looking for quite some time now and I still can't
find anything. Call up the company that sold me the
PCMCIA card but no luck with them. The same with the
enclosure. Also there is nothing on the recovery disk
for the notebook.
Why do I need the Boot disk?

The external drive is where I keep all of my Drive Image
backup files. Since a notebook has only one hard drive
I need another one for the backup images. I have four partitions
on the notebook but still if the hard drive goes bad all
the backups that was on the internal hard drive will be gone.

I do have a DVD burner for backup but when you try
to do a restore using DVD's or CDR's it will change the sizes of the
partitions on the hard drive in the notebook.
Then I will have to use a program like
MBRWork to change them back to the right size. Also
the Master Boot record will be change and some programs
will not work right. Also some of my stupid programs change
the EMBR. I try saving the MBR & the EMBR but some of
my programs change it every time you run them, I guess
for security reasons.

So far the only solution that I know of is to buy a
new notebook where the USB2 port are on the notebook
and no PCMCIA card is needed.

Thank for the reply and if you ever run across any way
that I could do it I sure would appreciated the help
Thanks again:
Ed

The first thing you need are socket services drivers to enable the PCMCIA
sockets. If you got a recovery disk with the notebook, those drivers may

be on
that disk.If it's a bootable disk, look in config.sys for the names.

Then you need DOS drivers for the USB card you have. Those would come from

the
manufacturer - if there are any. DOS drivers for USB devices are few & far
between. Same goes for the enclosure.

Good luck!

Is the laptop the only machine you have? Do you have a desktop machine? If so,
here's what I do with mine. I also use Drive Image. I have a network (ethernet)
connection between the laptop & desktop. I use the bootable floppy set created
by DI's Boot Disk Builder with the network stuff (TCP/IP) on it. I boot from
that, run Drive Image, creating the image onto the desktop's hard drive, then
from there I burn it onto a bootable DVD which can then be booted on the laptop
if I need to restore it. (Drive Image will restore the partitions the same size
as they were, provided you push the right buttons.)
I don't burn direct from the laptop to the DVD for a couple of reasons. DI2002
& earlier doesn't support DVD burning (DI7 & XP does). Tried it with CD's, but
unable to share the burner. And I think it's probably more reliable to create
the image on the HD, then burn it.
Also, another procedure I use is to create the image on the laptop, since it
has a big enough HD to hold it (in a separate partition), then network it over
to the desktop & burn it. This also gives me 3 copies of the image. Having a
copy on the laptop makes it convenient to recover from an "oh sh.t" situation.

If you have a desktop PC, and are able to do the network connection, then just
hook up your external drive to the desktop, and Windows will be able to handle
it. You probably could "share" it on the desktop side, and with the TCP/IP boot
disk on the laptop, create the image similar to what I described above.

Hope this helps.
Chris

Not sure how this will solve my problem. I guess
I need some time to think about it.
Thanks for the help
