Default Philips CDRW not being recognized

My friend got a Philips CDRW and after a couple of times the PC locks up,
upon reboot the PC will not recognize the CDRW. Rebooting it again, it
still will not recognize the CDRW.

Any ideas what causing this?

Is it the Philips CDRW?

IS it Windows ME

Apparently I originally thought the CDRW died but aafter putting in another
brand CDRW it worked fine, then putting in the Philips CDRW it worked fine
, then after three times the PC locked up again, upon reboot it then doesnt
want to recognize the Philips CDRW burner.

Any ideas Im aall ears

While it is possible the new Phillips CD-RW is failing intermittently, it is
unlikely.
If possible, install it in another machine to test.

In the original machine, boot to Safe Mode, and remove all instances of the
Phillips drive in device Manager. Cold reboot and retest.

N.B. WinMe detects the Phillips drive as an ordinary Cd reader. Your
burning software enables the writing features. The label for the drive, in
Device Manager and Explorer, and the registry, is reported by the firmware
in the drive.

If problems persist, try a new data cable, and possibly the other IDE slot
on the m/b.

And test after a very clean boot, so executing programs are not interfering.

Jack, DevMan will not see CD-ROM's in Safe Mode - the drivers aren't yet
loaded g

Dbotz, follow Jacks instructions except for :
In the original machine, boot to Safe Mode, and remove
all instances of the Phillips drive in device Manager.
Cold reboot and retest.

Reboot to Safe Mode, and look in DM there - you should see something....
