Error - "CD Rom drive is not accessible; the device is not ready."
I'm experiencing two problems with my D: drive.
First: After I insert an audio CD into my D:drive (the CD rom drive)and try to use the system's CD player, it says that no CD is inserted. So it's obviously not detecting it or able to read it. So it doesn't play the CD, of course. When I try to use another Audio program like Windows Media or Winamp, these programs read the CD and post it's information like the number of tracks and the length of each one. However, none of these programs will actually play the CD either. Because I was having this problem, I checked on the set-up and configuration of the D drive. I did the following, in sequence: Start; Settings; Control Panel; System; CD Rom; right click on Properties; Settings. In the Settings dialogue box, it said the device/drive was working properly. No other choices appearred to need to be changed. I saw, though, that below the designation of the drive assignment, which showed 'D:', there were two boxes for reserved drive assignments, one for starting drive letter and one for ending drive letter. Both of these boxes were empty and that seemed strange. I thought it meant that I was given an option to reserve the D drive as a cd rom drive so that, I guess, it then could not become a shared drive, which I don't want it to be. So I chose D for both the starting and ending drive letters and restarted my computer to activate the new settings. Ever since then, the drive is 'Not Ready'. I have learned that if the cd rom drive letter is the same as the reserved drive letters, I will not be able to access the drive. I think entering drive letters in the reserved assignment boxes, then, is causing my second problem. I would guess that the remedy for this problem would be to unassign the reserved drive letters, like they were before I changed anything. But, the pull down menu for choosing a drive letter (In the start and end boxes for the reserved drive) includes all the letters a thru z for choices, but does not include a choice of 'none', nor does the entry of a letter in the box delete when It's highlighted in blue in the box and I press either the space bar or delete; which will normally delete an entry in these windows choice boxes. It simply remains as the choice in the boxes. So, I really need to know how to delete the assignment of a reserved drive letter in that settings dialogue box, like it was to start with, so that I will once again have no conflicts or overlapping with my D drive and I can at least have an operable CD rom drive. This second problem, though, had a specific change in settings by me which I can see caused that problem. Especially since text CD's and any other data-type CDs had been working properly in the D drive before I made the changes. On the other hand, the first problem, explained above, already existed before this one and I gotta believe that it's cause and remedy are something I still don't know. Can someone please assist me in 1: Figuring out why the Windows CD player will not read my CD's when other audio programs will - and why none of the programs will play my audio CDs, even though other format-types of CDs are read and used fine by my PC?; AND 2: How do I reverse my settings choices for my rom drive so the entries for the reserved drive letter assignments will once again be empty and will have no letter chosen? Your assistance will be gratly appreciated. I thank you inadvance for a response at your very earliest convenience. Thankfully, Julie Eklund, J.D. |
