Default SysTray Volume Control Missing

Hello:

Win98

My Volume Control that sits in the SysTray is missing. It was there
before I installed MSN IM then when I installed that, the Control
disappeared. I went into MSCONFIG and disabled and re-inabled SysTray,
but that didn't do anything. I went into the Audio tab within
Multimedia from Control Panel, but I can't check the box for "Show
volume control on the taskbar" because that function has been
disabled, so I can't do anything there. I've looked under Windows
Setup within Add/Remove, and I removed the Volume Control setting
under Multimedia. I reinstalled that, and still nothing happened.

Does anyone know how I can get that back? Is there a registry setting
I should be looking at?

Thanks for your help.

I'd remove the audio driver, reboot and then reinstall the proper driver.

Bingo, Thanks Ron. I would never have thought of removing the audio
drivers. The volume control is back in the systray, and the check box
for "show volume control on the task bar" is checked, but its still
grayed out. Any idea where in the registry would this be?

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Question Ron?
Why did you nominate that he reinstall the "proper" driver?
He never stated he had a problem prior, and hence the wrong driver
that was working fine prior.
Just a question and learning curve.

The control went missing from the systray so what could have happened?
Maybe an audio driver update got installed or maybe the driver got
corrupted--who knows but it appeared to me the problem was probably being
caused by a driver issue. When I said reinstall the proper driver, my
assumption was that W98 would not contain the correct driver (it had very
few) and he would have to locate the right one to install.

It is strange that the icon is back in the systray and working but the item
is grayed out in the control panel. What you might want to do is boot in
safe mode and then check device manager for audio devices. Sometimes there
can be an entry that can cause a problem; however, the entry will not show
up in device manager in normal mode. Should you find entries in safe mode,
delete all of them and reboot. Then try loading the right driver again.

Default SysTray Volume Control Missing

I was fiddling around with the area, and this is what I found. From
Multimedia, under the Audio Tab, and for Playback, in the drop down
for Playback, the current setting is "Use any available device" and
the "Show volume control on the task bar" box is checked but it is
grayed out. However, if I pick the other option "C-Media Wave Device
{1}" then I have access to the check box for the volume control. But,
if I go back to the original setting of "Use any available device"
then I don't have access to that check box, and the check mark is
removed from that box.

Oh well, its working now, and I'm satisfied. I know what to do the
next time.

Thanks for your help.

FWIW, yea, selecting "Use any available device" there not only grays the option, but unchecks it. That seems to be normal!

My "Show volume control on the task bar" box disappears if I select
any of the following as my playback device:

Game Compatible Device
Voice Modem Wave #00 Line
Voice Modem Wave #00 Handset

Presumably this means that there is no way for SNDVOL32.EXE to control
the volume of these devices.
