cmdninst / krnl386 error
Installing new printer (Epson R320). Had to make a couple of attempts at
installing included software for Printer drivers. When it did seem that drivers were installed, connected printer as instructed. Took about 5 minutes to recognize printer. When it did recognize it, a WINDOWS error came up and read the following: "CMDNINST has caused an error in KRNL386.EXE. CMDNINST will now close." At that point the system becomes alittle unsable and windows will not restart, but, this is the strange part, if unplug the USB from printer, I get no more error and Windows does fine. Contacted Epson tech line- they say it appears to be Microsoft driver problem possiblly needing more up to date USB drivers. I do stay up to date with MS update. I do have and did tell them that I have USB-1. Tech & paper work state USB-1 will work. Further Epson states they think the problem is the built in card reader on printer and Windows is trying to configure it as a bootable drive or something like that. I did go to the Epson site and download the newest version of the correct software, installed it, and still have same problem. I have no other printers installed at this time, but have had others previous to this and have done a total uninstall on them. I currently have a flat bed scanner installed. A Visioneer 6100 USB. Things I tried thus far to correct is - Using msconfig, did an extract of both the CMDNINST & KRNL386 to reinstall and overwrite back into the SYSTEM FOLDER. That had no effect. Have tried to find any kind of driver update for USBs but not sure if that is the problem as I have NEVER had any problem in this area before with any software/hardware. I realize this is long so thanks for reading. Anyone Help?? Eric |

Eric, a couple of possible options to consider and/or try :-
Unplug your printer, run System Restore and roll-back to before you first attempted to install your printer. Re-boot and confirm all other things work normally as they did before. Try installing your printer again *according to the instructions* - in other words confirm whether or not you plug your printer in before or after you install the software/drivers (probably before) - it can make a difference. If no improvement, try connecting the printer via a powered hub to see if that might help. In the meantime take a look at :- http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...738&foid=50263 As you have only got USB1 (your USB sockets are probably driven from the Motherboard i.e. 'on-board' then you may have to consider fitting a PCI - USB2.0 card (Which isn't very expensive and would vastly improve things anyway!) and although not your exact model, take a look at and consider :- http://esupport.epson-europe.com/Vie...BF031D774A7107 Mart "Eric" wrote in message ...
