Apparently we had a power surge. The computer only boots up in safe mode. I
tried system restore and everything else the troubleshooter suggested. i
can't reinstall Windows ME because it is the software that came with the
computer.

Any suggestions? To be honest I have no idea how these things are responded
to so if some has suggestion if they could e-mail it to
I would greatly appreciate it.

If it came with the computer than if the computer came from an OEM they MUST
provide you with a way to reinstall the operating system.

Are you sure that it is in Safe Mode? It *may* just be the wrong screen
resolution which looks like Safe Mode.

Does it say 'Safe Mode' in each corner of the display?

If you are sure that it really is in Safe Mode, what happens when you
shut-down and re-boot?

Does it automatically run Scandisk?
Does it then attempt to start in Normal Mode?

Have you got the 'Enable Startup Menu' box set in msconfig? Run
msconfig.exe and on the General tab, select Advanced and uncheck the 'Enable
Startup Menu' box.

I love it when people do that to me. Thank you. No, really. Thank you. You
made me think outside of the box for a moment. You get so used to answering
the same questions day after day and only getting to research once in a
while so I never even thought about that aspect. I find that, even in the
9x/ME groups, I learn far more than I give. I, for one, appreciate a good
post and tend to make it a point to actually tell the author when I see one.
This one was so far outside of the "typical" responses that it made me think
of a specific person who's almost always making me think along new lines.
Anyhow, thanks again.

You're welcome Galen, the "Been there, Done that" T-shirt's on its way!!

Let's just hope that this is the reason for David's problem - assuming he
can find his way back to this News Group g If so, he *may* have to
re-install his video drivers (via the 'real' Safe Mode route) to fully
resolve it.
