Default Complete Reload of Win 98

I got an old HP Pavillion 6470z with Windows 98. I installed Linux, but I
was disapointed in it and would like to restore Win 98. The HP restore disks
do not seem to have the OS, just files. I do have a Microsoft certificate of
authenticity, but no CD for Win 98. What are my options?? Is ther some way
I can download Win 98 since I have the certificate of authenticity?

Thanks

A vendor's Restore disk will usually return the system back
to the state in was in when it left the assembly line.

The CD may be bootable, or you may need a companion
boot floppy supplied by the vendor.

Check the HP site for details.

Your other option is to purchase a Windows 98 SE CD.
Try a local small mom-and-pop computer shop.

Thanks to both you who replied. I did run the recovery disk (the first one).
The situation is that when the PC reboots after loading the files, it is Red
Hat that comes up, not Windows. What is to be done in this situation?

Thanks again

If nothing you have permits a restoration of Windows, the second link at
the page I gave you covers that eventuality.

That suggests there is some sort of boot loader that is loading a partition
other than the one that Windows is being installed into. This will happen
if Windows installation sees a valid DOS primary partition, but that's not
the partition being booted by the boot loader.

It may be possible to disable or reconfigure the boot loader, but you would
have to know what it was and how to use it, and that would probably still
leave you with a partition that was inaccessible to Windows.

If you can afford to get rid of everything on the hard disk, then use ZAP or
WIPE at this site to create a blank hard disk, and run the recovery CD
again.

Jeff, yes what I want is to get rid of everything on the hard disk, including
the troublesome boot loader. Once I download wipe, what do I do to burn it
to a CD that the PC will boot from and wipe the hard drive??

By the way, the link below does not work. I did find other sites with wipe.
I assume it is the same thing.

I don't know why the link won't work, as I checked it. The program simply
deletes any data on the disk starting at the beginning and continuing far
enough to be sure that the partition information is erased. The same result
can be achieved with most hard disk drive diagnostic programs.
