Default 768 MB memory question

I want to go from 512 MB to 768 MB on Windows 98. I am wondering,
although Windows may not use the extra memory, will my other programs be
able to use it? Also I understand there is a bug in Windows that causes
system instability at over 512 MB memory. However, I adjusted my VCACHE
settings. Will that be enough of a workaround to deal with the bug?

Thanks!

There should be little problem - if any - with installing that extra bit of
Ram, provided the Mobo can handle it, that you've made adjustments to the
Maxfilecache under the Vcache header in System.ini, and the Ram stick is
compatible with your existing Ram.

*Editing* within Ram intensive programs such as Adobe Photoshop, playing
games and the like will no doubt benefit from such a boost in Ram. FYI:
running W98se with 1 GB Ram (two 512 MB sticks); Vcache set to 512000 in
System.ini

Default 768 MB memory question

Hi,

Yes, Windows and it applications will use the added RAM
if they need it.

With 768MB's of RAM installed following setting should be
added to the [vcache] section of windows\system.ini file.
MaxFileCache=512000

Now the question arises, is the increase of RAM going to make my system
faster! Ron Martel [MS MVP] has a technique for determining this.

Hi EDK,

Here's an additional source of information on the need to adjust
the maximum cache size in Win98.
