Default Open XML File with Excel

I have Office XP and I am trying to open an XML file with Microsoft Excel
but I am getting the following message:

"This XML file cannot be opened because of an error. Check to make sure the
file is a valid XML file, and that the XML syntax is correct. You can also
try re-creating the file and closing other applications before you attempt
to open it again."

You must ask in an XP newsgroup because XP and its apps were
configured for XML in ways Win98 never was.

It may be related to an actual malformed or un-supported [format] XML file.

Or potentially related to update status of your application or OS.

Not really enough information to supply an informed suggestion.
