Default Recovery disc re-instal: can't get past W98 logon (repost)

Below is the copy of the response to this problem from a month ago!
I've tried both solutions but still no success. This is an all usb
pc...does that help? Any further assistance would be great. Tks.

And, should Noel's correct solution not work for some reason, try a work
around by assigning a blank password in safe mode:

Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon and
select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and
ensure the "all user's" box is marked. If you have a password established,
go to control panel, passwords, change windows password, type the password
in the old box, leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have
forgotten your password, delete the .pwl file with your user name (mine is
ron.pwl); however, be aware that you will lose all passwords stored in the
...pwl file. If you do not have a password established or have deleted the
...pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user name
only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you have Tweak
UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear last
user."

Since the user has mouse/KBD access before logon, the USB must be switched

We are all assuming that OP had legacy support enabled for the install. We
do not know whether or not the user has retained the legacy setting for the
boot. If not, and if Windows is assuming that the keyboard is configured as
it was for the install, then the boot will fail.

No it won't - USB is detected and drivers are loaded in the default
configuration, and as such are not dependent on the Legacy settings -
besides which he's uninstalled/reinstalled the mouse and keyboard in this
configuration.

Default Recovery disc re-instal: can't get past W98 logon (repost)

I've read your responses. Tks. I haven't checked BIOS yet (it's a neighbour's
PC), but reading the Intel link provided by Jeff, I can do all the things it
says may not work if there is a legacy prob. Also even though I've removed
all refs to keyboard and mouse in device manager (in safe mode) I've still
got control if I boot in safe mode again, and of course I can't re-install
that hardware in safe mode. And also re-installing from scratch with the
recovery disk still gives the same problem.
But I will check that legacy is enabled in BIOS.

If you have run through the Intel tests then I would agree it's not likely a
legacy support issue.

Do you know that USB is working on this machine? Is USB getting loaded in
safe mode, and can you test it?

You have two assumptions - USB is getting detected properly, and USB drivers
are loading properly.

Jeff -
THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE BOTH WORK IN SAFE MODE!!!
therefore the USB works - but there is some factor inhibiting its effective
use in normal mode.
Please read what the poster has written, rather than attempting to support
incorrect assumptions

I can only think that the driver files themselves have been corrupted, and
that you need to force a new driver set into the system.
I suggest that you download updated drivers from the manufacturer's website,
and install them (hopefully, you'll be able to do so while in Safe Mode),
and then reboot. to normal mode where the system should detect the updated
drivers and fix itself - if not, then reboot to safe mode, and remove the
devices as before, and reboot again.

the
..pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a
user
name
only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you
have
Tweak
UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear
last
user."

Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Keyboard and Mouse entries
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' Branch (if present)
Remove ALL error-flagged entries
Boot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the drivers, hopefully
curing
your problem

news Gateway Neo recovery disks used to re-install W98SE. No problems
with
setup.
When it gets to the password window after the instal I have no
mouse
or
keybd
control. It will boot in Safe Mode OK. Keybd and mouse control all
OK.
So if I can have help in bypassing the Passwd window or some other
fix,
that
would be great. Tks in anticipation.
