I found this:

I have tried adding several different drivers to the config.sys, I found keyboard.sys and keybrd2 - keybrd4, all of these cause a hang at their loading. I noticed that vmmouse.vxd is loaded but a keyboard.vxd doesn't seem to even be required because a search online didn't really return anything. Removing keyboard.drv didn't help, it caused my to not even get to the screen where it asks for a name. My next plan of action is to find a replacement keyboard.drv online somewhere, and if that doesn't work then I'm going to remove all non-essential hardware and do a bare bones attempt (thinking there could be a conflict between the keyboard.drv and something else in my system). I couldn't find anyone else who's ever had this problem after hours of searching (probably because most don't have multi-OS) Is there a way to bypass the need for name entering perhaps? Also is there a way to do safe-mode? (doesn't appear possible until you've run Windows at least once and entered your name + serial) |

Erase the disk and reinstall the OS. If the system is asking you for the
name and product ID then it is running in a mini-windows mode, and AFAIK there's no way that you can replace the keyboard driver. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... The keyboards are both typical and no its not a PC-wide problem. (desktop) See my reply to Donald. |

I already did this before ever posting here. I even went so far as to remove
XP as well so that I could try it on its own physical disk instead of XP having info in the boot sector and stuff. "Jeff Richards" wrote: Erase the disk and reinstall the OS. I just tried it again and it worked for me. Place the cursor over the words
"keyboard.drv" (not the ftp address) and left-click once. "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... Your link worked, but when I clicked on the link to download the file it said page not found. Why not tell us exactly what you have already tried to solve this problem,
as it would save an enormous amount of time. Are you saying that you have run the Windows installation procedure on a blank partition and that it completed correctly? If so, the system should not come up with a request for a name and product Id. This should be entered during the installation procedure. What exactly is the installation CD that you are using? -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... I already did this before ever posting here. Its the Windows 98 SE from April 1999, version 4.10.2222.
It doesn't ask for the installation ID or name during installation onto a 2 GB FAT16 partition. Oh and if you know of a program that can make XP use the old 98 kernel then my problem is solved, I'm just trying to get 98 up and running to use Bleem! which the NT4 + or NT5 kernel doesn't like because it tries to access the hardware directly (its a Playstation emulator) "Jeff Richards" wrote: Why not tell us exactly what you have already tried to solve this problem, as it would save an enormous amount of time. OK, I'll try replacing it later, don't have anymore time to mess with it for

didn't load. (hangs at a black screen with a blinking cursor right after the Win98 boot screen) I still have more trial and error to do, like I want to try replacing all of the installation files with whats in mini.cab, but the backup is tedious and I've done enough for one night. I was also thinking of modifying one or both of them to try different keyboard drivers, try it without the whole [keyboard] entry, there's lots of stuff I will try out when I get more time, probably later next week. I even went so far as to remove XP as well so that I could try it on its own physical disk instead of XP having info in the boot sector and stuff. "Jeff Richards" wrote: Erase the disk and reinstall the OS. If the system is asking you for the name and product ID then it is running in a mini-windows mode, and AFAIK there's no way that you can replace the keyboard driver. "mdp" wrote: I just tried it again and it worked for me. Place the cursor over the words "keyboard.drv" (not the ftp address) and left-click once. "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... Cab files can often be found on the HD put there by OEMs to facilitate the installation process. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188428 I didn't notice whether you were working with Win98 or Win98SE however the Keyboard.drv file appears to have the same size and date suggesting they are the same. "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... I can't load any regular windows drivers or anything because "I have to enter a name to use Windows" (this is bull$hit, but I won't get into that here) In my bootlog.txt it shows successful loading of KEYBOARD.DRV, but it fails to initialize.

Without knowing your system in detail I would say that the differences in
these files (apart from the naming) is that one is set up for the installation procedure and one is set up for normal running. Using files from mini.cab will not work - they are for a different version of Windows. It seems that you are running the installation in OEM setup mode, so that the system is installing a copy of Windows ready to be activated at first startup. This means it is possible that your version of Windows has been tailored for some specific hardware (such as a laptop) and that might be the reason for the keyboard failure. If that's the case, the keyboard problem is just the first of many. Try the installation from scratch with a generic copy of Windows 98SE. It will install standard device drivers, and will ask for the product ID during installation. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Joe7dust" wrote in message ... Damn, that sucks. Are you saying there is more than one version of
4.10.2222? I have searched around for it and I'm pretty sure its not OEM or for a laptop. "Jeff Richards" wrote: Without knowing your system in detail I would say that the differences in these files (apart from the naming) is that one is set up for the installation procedure and one is set up for normal running. Its the Windows 98 SE from April 1999, version 4.10.2222. It doesn't ask for the installation ID or name during installation onto a 2 GB FAT16 partition.
