Default DVD support on Windows98SE

I have an Hitachi DVD ROM GD-5000. My problem is the device behaves more
like a general CD-ROM i.e. I can read files e.t.c. with it but I can not
play DVDs with it. I think this is because the device driver installed by
windows is MSCDROM.INF. A file called HIT-DVD.SYS was supplied with the
hardware and I suppose this is the correct device driver, but I do not know
how to install this driver. I have tried going to the device manager
selecting "HITACHI DVD ROM GD-5000" which is listed in the CDROM category,
then pressing properties and then in the device properties dialog going to
the driver section and pressing update but that only accepts files that are
".INF" and I only have a ".SYS" file.

Any help woul be great, cheers.

Try installing the dvd player that came with the DVD drive. Typically
powerdvd or windvd.

Then try again.

You don't want to install the SYS file - that's only for a DOS boot
diskette.

What you are otherwise seeing is 100% normal - Windows sees a DVD drive as
if it were a CD drive - only much larger. :-) Inserting a data DVD disc
should allow you to read it as if you were inserting a CD disc into a CDROM
drive. To play movie discs you need a DVD movie player program, as Jon has
noted.

Even today's XP requires DVD movie playing software. This software tells
the PC what to do with the various filetypes native to DVD movies. Once
installed, this software should open automatically when a DVD movie is
inserted.
If you can read files on a DVD, that's all you generally get with a DVD ROM
with the package. Many DVD movies have built-in program that will install
DVD player software when the DVD movie is inserted. If autoinsert is
disabled or not working, you won't see it and it won't install.
