Default unicows.dll ??

I just downloaded Adobe Reader 6.0 and when I attempted to
open it I got the error message: Unable to load
unicows.dll. What is this, where do I get it and where
does it go?? Thanks!

unicows is not part of Win Me but is used by a number of applications to add
unicode support
to Win Me. One program that installs unicows.dll is Windows Media Player 9,
another is Visual Studio .NET. I'm surprised that Adobe Reader 6.0 requires
this file and that if it does it does not include a copy.

See "The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems" -
(http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/h..._announce.mspx) where the
operative words a

MSLU actually consists of two parts. The first part is a dynamic-link library
(DLL)- Unicows.dll-*that is redistributed with the application that the user
creates*.

Where, in this case, user = Adobe.

If I have Media Player 9, shouldn't this dll file be used
by Adobe Reader when I open it?

Have you checked for the presence of unicows.dll on your system? If so, where
is it located? If not in your windows\system folder then Adobe, if it
requires it, won't find it.

Mike, when I do a file/folder search on my c:drive, it
shows this dll in Windows media player, but not in the
Windows system folder. Should I download the dll and put
it in the Windows sysytem folder?

I would suggest you copy your current copy of unicows.dll to your
windows\system folder. If that still fails to work then place a copy of that
file in your Program Files\Adobe 6.0\Reader folder (or whatever the folder is
that contains acrord32.exe).

I have the WMP9 and the new Adobe Reader, both in Program Files and both
have a copy of the unicows.dll . The one with WMP is version 1.0.3626.0
and the one with Adobe Reader is version 1.0.3665.0 .

Should I replace the older version in WMP with the newer from Adobe?....or
just leave well enough alone, since everything is working just fine?!

I'd leave well alone. Thanks H for confirming that Adobe does install a copy
of unicows.dll, as it should, which just leaves the question as to why this
did not happen when Hue installed his copy of Acrobat.

unicows.dll v1.0.3626.0 - This is the version that ships with VS .NET (2003)
unicows.dll v1.0.3665.0 - I don't know the origin of this version although I
have a copy of this version that came as part of OE-QuoteFix. (3703 however
ships with Office 2003.)
