No Search Function
Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove possible variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker. http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html Use CWShredder, the removal tool: http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Larry" wrote in message ... I have recently lost my "Search" function in ME. The entry is still on the Start menu, but nothing happens when it is clicked. I have read many posts regarding TweakUI being the problem, but I did NOT have this installed when I lost this function. Having found no other solution or references, I downloaded TweakUI AFTER the symptom appeared. The desktop "Show Results" was checked. I then UNchecked it, applied, reopened TweakUI, checked the "Show Results" box, and reapplied. Still no luck. I suspect this is all part of a trojan search engine that recently took over Explorer. AdAware seemed to get rid of most of the symptoms, but my Control Panel is still acting odd (very slow) and no Search. I am about to wipe the drive and install XP anyway, but really need the Search function to find some things for archiving before the new OS. Help!! |

No Search Function
Download and run HiJackThis
read the instructions first, and post the results of the SCAN to the newsgroups - do NOT remove everything it finds, as it will find a large number of things which are REQUIRED for your computer to work! http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ HTH -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... No Search Function
Ah - creeping decrepitude!
A HiJackThis scan may still be a good idea, just in case. Glad you're sorted - well done! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Larry" wrote in message ... Thanks for your help. I did download HiJack This, and was preparing to post the results, but I had begun to notice additional symptoms. Some links in IE6 were not working, and I could not right click and "open in new window". I followed instructions in article Q281679 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base and re-registered the listed dll's. My search function is now restored, as well as "open in new window". Now off to see what else may be broken....thanks again.
