Problems installing printer
I'm trying to help a friend install an HP All-In-One Printer (PSC 1210)
over the phone. I never ran ME or 98, but am currently running Windows 2000. I had problems determining if he successfully loaded the software from his install CD. He can do test prints, but cannot print from applications. I tried to follow the advise on HP's Internet support for unloading the software to try a re-install, but could not find the uninstall program on his hard drive. The uninstall from the CD would also not work. He has some icons from the original install, but it seems most of the software is missing. Control Panel/Printers does not show his new printer. I am going to try to load the latest driver from HP onto his machine to see if that fixes the problem. I checked everywhere I could think of in Windows for signs of his original load, but couldn't find anything, except for these isolated icons on his desktop. I believe Windows ME does not have Plug-and-Play, and I am unclear how to add a new printer. I have already tried the 'Add Printer' from the printer status screen, but that asks for an install file. I probably achieve the samething by downloading the complete .exe from HP and running that. Anyone have ideas as to what's going on here, and how best to get this printer to work? It uses a USB port, which is plugged in at some time during the install (sounds like a plug and play operartion). Sherwin D. |

*NOTE* Using memory, some directions may be a little off
1) If the printer is not in the printer section of the control panel, chances are it was not properly loaded. 1) From c: Make a new folder called files 2) From files, make a new folder called drivers 3) from drivers, make a new folder call HP 4) Go to www.hp.com and download the latetst driver. (save it in c:\files\drivers\hp for ease of use) 5) Unpack or run the self extracting the "Unvervesal Serial Bus Controllers" (usb) section. If all this is fine, try the following: 6) Use the control panel / add printer wizard to install the printer and point the installer to the c:\files\drivers\HP 7)You should now atleast see the printer icon in the printer section. When he tries to print from an Application, make sure he goes to file / printer setup instead if simply clicking on print. From the printer setup, is the proper printer selected? If this fails: Control panel / system / Device manager. Verify that the no '!' exists by EXPANDING the USB If no "!" exist: Try the following 7)In the device Manager: Double click on the first heading: This should list all IRQ in use.. In my exprience, Win98 is horrid at handling devices that share an IRQ. You may want to force an IRQ if the printer is sharing one with lets say your video or sound card. Good luck, Renta-Geek |

Thanks for the reply. I got a little further with this printer connection by
unloading my friend's incomplete previous load, and then re-installing the drivers from HP's web site. However, inside the installer, after you are prompted to plug in the USB, I got the message that the hardware connection was bad, and the install could not proceed. Talking to HP help line, I was told that their printer uses a USB 2.0 protocol, and the drivers for the DELL were for USB 1.0. I was told to contact DELL for the appropriate USB 2.0 driver. I checked DELL's web site and found no such driver for USB 2.0 under Windows ME. I called DELL and they said there was no such driver for that computer. They recommended I buy a USB 2.0 PCI card and install that in the DELL. They said the software was mostly already in place, and plugging in the USB 2.0 to this new card would complete the install. It sounds reasonable to me, but I'm amazed that there is no way to plug in a USB 2.0 type printer into these older DELL computers. The HP people even gave me the name of the USB 2.0 driver from IBM required. I'm wondering if the DELL support was just trying to give me a brush off, or installing a new USB card is the only way to fix this. Sherwin D. This is sheer BS on both HP's and Dell's part - the printer will work fine
over a USB1 connection providing the installation of both the ports and the printer is done properly. (and there's no way that you can install USB2 drivers onto USB1 ports) I suspect that the problem has to do with Dell's install of the USB ports. Reboot to Safe Mode Open Device Manager Remove ALL USB ports Remove ALL USB hubs Remove ALL USB Controllers Remove ALL devices in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present Reboot to Normal Mode. Windows will reinstall any required drivers. Make a careful note of any error messages, and post back If no error messages, reinstall the printer following the manufacturer's instructions. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "sherwindu" wrote in message ...
