Slow performance
Hi, at the moment my PC is running very very slowly, and I
can't understand why. I double click on a file and it loads about 60 seconds later. However if I enter the program and then open the document from there then it loads much quicker. Whats going on? Also when trying to shutdown the PC the computer won't respond, then the dialog box appears saying that a program may be busy or is waiting for a response from me. I click on end task and then the PC finally shutdowns. Strangely the program name doesn't appear in the dialog box. I haven't loaded any new software in the last couple of weeks and I've used msconfig to see which programs load at startup and there aren't any new ones. I've also used Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see what is currently running in the background but again nothing new is running that could cause a problem. |

What is running in the background?
Click StartRun, type MSINFO32 and click OK. In the left pane of the System Information window, click the + sign to expand the "Software Environment" category. In the left pane, click to select "Startup Programs"....they will appear in a list on the right. Press Ctrl-A on the keyboard, which will highlight everything in the list on the right. Press Ctrl-C to copy the list to the 'clipboard'. Open a reply to this message, click in the body of the message and press Ctrl-V to paste the list from the clipboard to the message, and post back to this thread. Also post what is listed in the Close Program box when you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, when the problem is occurring. Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan. Use CWShredder, the CoolWeb removal tool, available he http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip Close all browser windows, run CWShredder, and click the Fix button. In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds. Ad-Awa http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations: http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Copy the log files and paste them into a reply to this post. Last things first....Msgsrv32 is only a messenger, it is not the cause of the
problem. your RNA admin error when shutting down: It is caused by RealPlayer or RealOne player being in your startup group. Open RealOne or RealPlayer, click the Preference or Options menu, and root around till you find a way to turn off SmartStart and/or disable all updates and headlines. It is easier to do in RealPlayer; RealOne makes it difficult to disable through the program. Otherwise, you can click StartRun, type MSCONFIG and click OK Click the Startup tab, and look on the list for the item referring to RealNetworks or RealPlayer or RealOne, and remove the check mark, and click OK, then reboot. (It is this item in your list: TkBellExe Registry (Machine Run) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot) Actually, a better alternative than MSCONFIG is to install one of these startup managers, and use it to disable or delete the Real or RealPlayer entry in your startup group: http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ Another option is to uninstall RealOne and then install RealPlayer 8, and disable SmartStart in the Preferences menu, along with all updates and headlines: RealPlayer 8 download.: http://forms.real.com/real/player/legacy.html?type=mlb Click the Windows 95 link. Another option is to uninstall RealOne or RealPlayer in Add\Remove Programs, if you don't use it. Here's an old discussion on the error: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1030471178 OK.....next to go on your list is Find Fast. depending upon which version of Office you have installed, follow the instructions in one of these articles, to disable Find fast: OFFICE 97: How to Disable the Find Fast Indexer http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=158705 OFFICE 2000: How to Turn Off the Find Fast Indexer http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=199787 OFFICE XP: Hard Disk Runs Continuously After You Install Office XP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=282106 You also do not need Office StartUp (OSA) starting with Windows. here should be a shortcut on your Start Menu, at Start Programs StartUp....right-click that OSA Office Startup shortcut, and click Delete to remove the shortcut from the StartUp folder. You can also disable LoadQM, following the procedure in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309418 Once you disable these items, and reboot, see if there is any change in your performance, and post back here. What version of McAfee Virus Scan do you have installed? It has been known to cause the type of delays you describe, and your startup entries look like they belong to an outdated version. You may do better switching to a different anti-virus...let me know if you need references to a better app. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ...
