Disconnecting broadband from nic
I've just moved from dial-up to broadband for my internet access.
To reduce the risk of attack whilst I'm not using the internet I would like to disconnect the pc from the network without unplugging it. I was using "winipcfg" to release my connection when not required. After installing "NetMeter" I've noticed that although I release my IP address all UL's stop but the DL count still continues (albeit small, also I'm sure if this count goes towards my download limit). Is there any way I can disconnect/disable the nic when it is not required? Ted |

If you have ADSL with PPPoE, you should be able to use the PPPoE manager to "hang up". Other than that, a router would be an excellent purchase. You should be able to find a decent router for around $30, or so. Your NIC is not connected directly to the modem, so you are not exposed to unsolicited packets; the router handles that part of the connection. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

Norman,
I receive my internet by cable via a STB (set top box) so I can't turn that off as I then lose my tv. Any further ideas? Thanks, Ted "N. Miller" wrote in message . ..
