Default MS-DOS Compatability & 2 Hard Drives

I recently installed a 2nd hard drive, copied the drive as new boot drive;
set new drive as C: and old drive as D:.

Problem is... I ended up in DOS Compatability mode. Is this because there
are 2 bootable drives connected? (As long as only one of the drives is
connected -- performance is optimal)
Thanks,
Dave
