Default PCR & ppl with Avast! concerns.

Hello PCR, and anyone else,,,

I have got a reply back from Avast that may be at least a little good
news, and here it is:::

" Hello!

Thank you for contacting ALWIL Software company with your concerns.

My name is Michal and I am happy to assist you today.

The next program version (5.0) will NOT support Windows 98; however,
the virus database updates (and possibly even smaller program updates,
if needed) will be released for avast! 4.x even when avast! 5.0 exists.

But, at some point (at the end of 2009, or possibly 2010 or maybe later
- it's not known exactly at the moment), the virus database updates for
4.x will stop.

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact me again.

Best regards

Michal Zrubecky

At least that squeezes a little more, I personally liked it when he said
"However".
Hope this helped PCR.

Thanks, S/C. That restores half my hopes that were dashed! Seems there's
a chance virus definitions may continue to 2010. That's iffy enough for
one to hope avast! may decide to go even further when time arrives. It
doesn't sound like the program will cease to function altogether,
either, when definitions no longer are updated. Just, we won't get new
ones-- but is anyone writing viruses/trojans for Win98 anymore?

STILL, as the months pass, I'm going to want to make some final
decisions on Internet security issues. I'm going to have to rearrange my
partitions & establish one with minimal -- if any -- contact to the NET!
And, for the one that has contact, the time is coming for a 17th attempt
at definitive Kerio Firewall settings!

I've got my fingers crossed that some smart person on this group will
post some easy to follow instructions on how best to secure a 98 system
once Avast is no more--hint hint--hope hope.

Not so PCR.... I believe he is implying closer to 2011 unless I
mis-read. The defs' will definately go to at least 2010.

Then I am definately in the same boat as you. Meb has graciously talked
me through a lot of things concerning being secure, and has said how I
must have a F/W... but I too havent got a clue how to set it up. Mine
too is Kerio, (the last one)but I know nothing about 'ports' or how to
make it all work. Please let me know how your 17th attempt goes, then I
will do whatever you did.

You can get Kerio running quick enough. It runs well out-of-the box.
It's very versatile in rule formation & will offer to start a new one
when an outgoing or incoming contact is attempted. You may modify the
new rule afterwards to make it specific. Individual rules can be turned
off/on. Rule sets can be exported/imported & stored/switched. Program
signatures (MD5) are kept, & you will be informed if a program no longer
is the same when it attempts to make a contact. That little program has
got a lot! But it's fairly difficult to understand what packets are &
how they work.

www.geocities.com/yosponge
Download his rule set, but it may need some modifying.
