Default Avast! in! McAfee out!

I DON'T want to mean-mouth McAfee v.5.21.1000 Scan Engine 4.3.20. (I
never paid them for it beyond what Compaq passed on in '00). HOWEVER,
first the auto went-- & now even the MANUAL update of definitions will
no longer work for me, reporting one of the new .dats is corrupt! (Maybe
I needed to take the later Scan Engine 4.4.00, but I didn't care to try
it again; it caused sluggishness once before).

ANYHOW, contrary to my worst fears & expectations, McAfee uninstalled
quick & well! It left 3 huge folders behind (easily deleted), but there
wasn't much left in the Registry after it's own uninstall routine (by
the word of InCtrl5)...

Keys deleted: 495
Values added: 1
Values deleted: 1475
Values changed: 28
Folders deleted: 16
Files added: 5
Files deleted: 179
Files changed: 13

Here is what the install of Avast! 4.7.1001 did...

Keys added: 170
Values added: 196
Values changed: 39
Folders added: 19
Files added: 199
Files changed: 17

SO... that's a LOT LESS in the Registry! And I installed all of the
"providers"-- Internet Mail, Instant Messaging, P2P Shield, Standard
Shield & WEB Shield, although I suspect I don't actually use IM or P2P.
And things seem lots quicker, even with On-Access Protection turned on &
set high-- only, maybe, posts are coming in a bit slower through
Avast!'s filter. Perhaps I need to set On-Access to low for that. Maybe
its hooks...

Keyboard Aswidle.dll ASHSERV.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\Aswidle.dll C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\ASHSERV.EXE

CBT Avcommex.dll ASHSERV.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\Avcommex.dll C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\ASHSERV.EXE

Mouse Aswidle.dll ASHSERV.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\Aswidle.dll C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWIL
SOFTWARE\AVAST4\ASHSERV.EXE

....are behaving better than McAfee's did.

BUT there are problems to be detailed in accompanying posts.

PCR,

I think you may like AVAST! It doesn't appear to be the resource hog McAfee
is, and as you said, doesn't get it's hooks as deep into the Registry.

You may want to turn off e-mail scanning too. It also has a cool voice that
tells when an Auto Update has finished with the computer, in addition their
"Warning-virus detected" is pretty cool too.

Yea, so far I'm happy enough, though still in a discovery stage about
it. I've given up TWICE trying to read through every help page, though.
In general, things DO seem to be quicker. I think I can practically
swear it seems easier to do other things while Avast! is actually
scanning than it was with McAfee! But I don't want to mean-mouth McAfee!

The sluggishness in synchronizing posts when I've gone online I think
now is not that the Internet Mail "provider" is on-- but that I'm
reading them in while Avast! is updating its definitions (iAVS). That
happens automatically once the NET connection is established & takes
about 15 minutes. So, two things are happening at once! But I see glee
also is quizzical of the E-Mail scanner. Also, I know Bear usually is.
So, soon I must play with Eicar & my E-Mail to see whether there is a
benefit to using it.

There's no notice that iAVS has started, but a nice one, yea, with a
voice, when it's done. The first day or two, I was actually clicking the
iAVS button myself-- & causing Avast! to update the definitions twice in
a row! Well, the second one would eventually say the definitions already
were the latest (but not with the voice).

I've been meaning to do that test with E-Mail. OK, thanks, I'll try

is afforded, I suppose I should uninstall that component-- which I guess
is the Internet Mail "provider". I'll have to go look at those help
screens again. Let's see... sheesh, it looks like a lot reading to do!
I'm not quite sure it applies to me, though, as v.4.5 is prominently
mentioned! But I do see "START button, Programs, avast! Antivirus, Mail
Protection Wizard" JUST where the help says it would be. I haven't
clicked that yet, but...

OK, OK, I'll send myself an E-Mail shortly & get back to you probably
later today. Thanks.

SO... it would have to be something Norton can't catch, I guess, for me

Yea. Until something untoward happens, I guess I'll let Avast! control
the E-Mail. DESPITE NetZero claims (rereading its message) that IT
prevented the messages from being sent-- it was Avast! alerts I saw!
And, only when I paused Avast!'s Internet Mail Provider were they able
to get out of the OE Outbox! SO, I guess that's that.
