Default DVD drive is not playing DVD

Thanks for explaining these things to me.

Nope, that's an incorrect assumption. The light flickering means that
something's trying to access the drive, not that it's succeeding. If the
head is dirty then it will try but fail and that's why the light may be
flashing on and off as it re-tries to read the disc.

Been up to date on all those spyware/adware programs. No smoking here.
Dust yes. But hopefully not too much. The other CD-RW drive works

fine.
I had been trying to use the Computer drive cleaner. Will have to get

the
plain CD one as suggested but I fear that will not do it. Tell me,

would
the light flicker if the drive were bad? I thought as long as the light
showed it was "trying" to access the CD it was not idicative of a bad
drive.
Thanks,
Nutty

Try cleaning the drive with an audio CD cleaning disc - one made for a

CD
player, not one of the fancy "computer/multimedia" cleaning discs;

since
your computer is not recognizing discs you'll only be wasting your

money.
If your computer is in an environment that has lots of pet dander,

smoke
or
dust you may want to clean it two or three times following the

instructions
on the disc. Once it's cleaned, try a couple discs. If they still
aren't
recognized then you may have a faulty drive that needs to be replaced.

I have had a couple reports of spyware/adware infestations interfering

with
a CD or DVD drive so you may want to peek at
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm for some tools to scan for

infections.

Yes, it is a DVD drive. And it doesn't recognize CDs either. I

should've
stated that. Each time the yellow light flickers for probably a full
minute, but it never "takes". The CD is never recognized.

Is this a data DVD or a movie DVD? Does the drive recognize CDs?

Is
the
drive in fact a DVD drive?

On my Windows 98SE computer, when I put a DVD into the D drive the
little
light flickers, however it never does recognize the DVD. Do I

have
something set up incorrectly? I go into My Computer and can see

the
DVD
is
not showing up. I click on the drive letter but it keeps me doing
a
"retry" that never works. Help. What is going on?
Thanks,
Nutty

Thanks Dave,

OK, I'll need guidance on this one. See replies within your message ...

Another thing to try is to remove the storage controller in
setttings/system/device manager tab/hard disk controllers. Reboot.

There are three hard disk controllers. Would it be the primary or secondary
IDE?? Or a PCI Bus master IDE?? I am not familiar with doing such a thing.
If you had the PC open recently or moved the PC to a different place,

unplug
and reconnect both the power and ide ribbon cable connectors on the DVD
drive.

Tried that before.

If you have a 98 startup disk, boot with cdrom support.

Do you mean the CD that came with the computer?

Insert a known
working CD (not DVD). Check the D: drive by typing in "D:", hit the
return key. Type in "dir". It should return with data lising the content
of the root of the directory structure. If not, its probably hardware
associated. If it does, its a windows problem.

Another twist is that I had to reinstall something that was "looking" for
the D drive. I couldn't figure how to get around it since my D drive was
not working. So I changed the D drive to be a J drive. Then changed my E
(CD-RW) drive to the D so I could install or reinstall that program.

Not hard...

1. Winkey + Pause/Break (to open Device manager...or do it the way you
are used to)

2. Expand the CDROM entry

3. Click the correct drive

4. Click "Remove"

5. Close Device Manager

6. Reboot

Ok, I removed the DVD drive. Rebooted. Now it has renamed my DVD drive the
D drive again. Tried a CD. Still get the same thing ... a flickering
little yellow/green light but it never plays the CD or recognizes it.

Only suggestion I can make before you go shopping for a new one is to
check the cables (both the IDE and the power) to make sure they are
secure....unplug and plug back in. Better yet, try different ones.
