Default Colors: High Color vs True Color

I recently installed an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400 video board on my
Win98SE system. The four color-options now available are (1) 16
Colors, (2) 256 Colors, (3) High Color (16 bit), and (4) True Color
(32 bit).

I had it set for True Color and had many instances of BSD. I've now
set it for High Color and haven't had the problems. What would cause
the problems to occur at True Color and not at High Color? I've got 1
GB of RAM and plenty of hard disk space. The screen area is set for
1024 x 768 pixels.

Is there any thing I can do to get True Color to work, or should I be
happy with High Color?

Thanks for any insight.

What have you set as the MaxFileCache restriction? Try lowering this
figure. The more colours you use the larger the video RAM required, so you
might be running into a memory limitation problem

Sometimes your 'refresh' rate can cause these problems.
Go to Display Properties (rt clk on a blank spot on your desktop,
choose Properties),Settings,Advanced,Adapter and check it out. Most
use at least 85Mhz and not Optimal or Default.
Also go to the Monitor tab and make sure your Monitor is being
recognized properly.
If you are using Win98, make sure you have the MaxFileCache=512000
line in your System.ini file under the [vcache] header.

The MaxFileCache line was missing from my system.ini file (I had it
there previously). I have now added it back in, set to 524288.

I couldn't directly respond to Buffalo's note, so the responses are
here. Should I change the refresh rate from 85mhz to Optimal? The
video board has 64 mb of memory, a big jump from the 4 mb on the
previous board.

On the monitor issue, I have two showing up: Plug and Play Monitor and
Default Monitor. I have P&P selected.

Many thanks for your help.

Have you gotten up to True-Color yet?
I would try to have the monitor recognized properly (ie:Envision 910,
Sony...etc.) because then you get the proper color and refresh rates
for that particular monitor)
If you need help doing that, post back and someone will help out
(usually very simple to do).
Did you find the two monitors (plug and play, and default) listed in
Device Manager, or in Display Properties?
If your monitor supports it, I would use 85MHz or higher for the
refresh rate.
In your BIOS, you might want to check what the Aperture Size is set
to. Try 64MB as this usually works quite well.
While in the BIOS, check to see if your vid card is set to 4X or 2X
and set it to the proper one.(shouldn't make any difference with
getting to the true-color setting).
Download the latest drivers for you monitor and put them in a folder
you can find.
Assuming you only have one monitor, go into Safe Mode, Device Manager,
Monitor and delete all the monitors shown.
Reboot, and when the monitor is recognized, point Windows to the dir
where the latest monitor drivers are (point it to the .inf file)
PS: I just realized that you also just flashed your BIOS. I believe
the problem may be in there since the BIOS usually goes to 'default'
(non-optimal) values when you flash it.
Adrian RoJakPot, I believe, has a very good site which explains how to
set your BIOS up (or at least what the settings do).
http://www.rojakpot.com/
Look on the left side for BIOS Opt Guide.
Have fun.

I did have True Color running with Optimal refresh rate, last night
and early today, but after deleting the monitors and having Windows
reload them (default and plug & play), I started getting the BSD
again. I'm now back at High Color with Optimal refresh rate. When I
went into safe mode, 4 monitors appeared (default twice, plug & play
twice). I can't find any drivers for my specific monitor (Digital
DEC62E1), so I'm using the Windows default ones.

The Aperture Size is 128mb, AGP speed is 4x. I think I'll have to
live with High Color. Anyone know where to find monitor drivers for a
Digital 21"?

Thanks for all your help.

Perhaps you need to update your MotherBoard drivers.

Did you delete ALL of the monitors listed while in Safe Mode?
Perhaps the Optimal setting is best for your particular system.

http://www.maxtux.co.uk/dist/ark/1.0...ata/MonitorsDB

Digital Equipment Corp.; Digital 21 in. Color (SN-VRCX1-WA); dec62e1;
30.0-95.0; 50.0-152.0; 1
This tells you the Hor and Ver sync rates, but I don't know if this
info will help you or not.

It also tells you that the EISA ID is SN-VRCX1-WA . Put
SN-VRCX1-WA in a search engine.

You may be able to use your monitor onscreen settings to set the horz
and vert settings to those recommended.
Found this which shows the recommended (or possibly the max) refresh
rates at different resolutions.
http://sw.adhoc.ch/DRIVERS/matrox/bi...tup351/mga.mon

"[Digital.SN-VRCX1-WA,W3,W4*.Millennium]
640X480 = NI, )
800X600 = NI, )
1024X768 = NI, )
1152X864 = NI, )
1280X1024 = NI, )
1600X1200 = NI, )
1600X1200.X24 = NI, ) "

There are more, different recommendations on this site for different
models of SN-VRCX1-WA.

For a major retry:
Install latest MB drivers.
Get the vid drivers you want to use and install them in a folder that
you can find.
Go into Safe Mode and change your Display Adapter to Standard PCI
Graphics Adapter (VGA)
Unistall your old vid card drivers.
Delete all the entries under the Monitor tab.
Reboot into Normal (if there is such a thing) Windows and point
Windows to the .inf file in the folder you have the vid drivers in.
Pray.

DEC was bought out by Compaq which was bought out by HP.

Try HP website. http://www.digital.com/
Or this:
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?
h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_cli ent=S-A-
R163-1&h_query=Digital+21+in.+Color+%28SN-VRCX1-WA%29%
3B+&submit.x=9&submit.y=7

It has some drivers on it.
