Dual Channel memory
Does anyone know if Win98SE supports dual channel memory?
I have read that ME does not! I have been helping my son put together a new computer. When I put the 2 sticks (256MB each and bought as a dual channel set) into the 2 channels I get too many hangs, even when loading from the CD. When I put both in one channel all seems to be OK! Thanks & Regards Tony Colorado |

Windows 98 and Me can both use dual channel memory. However there is an
issue with Windows 9x/Me systems and large amounts of RAM, and this may be causing your system to hang. Support for dual-channel memory is a motherboard issue, not a Windows issue.
In most cases, errors of this type are because the two memory modules are not "matched" - preferably of the same brand, size and lot, and have been tested in dual-channel use; or at least the same brand, size and speed ratings. -- Richard G. I have a Win98SE system with one-gig dual channel RAM (two 512 sticks) working fine for the last year (in fact most stable system I
have)! Your system may be setup up incorrectly (eg - timing settings too fast or missing the needed SYSTEM.INI entry for over 512 RAM) OR the memory can be bad (I've had this happen and returned it under warrantee). Make sure SYSTEM.INI contains the following if you have more than 512 RAM: [vcache] maxfilecache=524288 If no joy, you may want to try a memory tester such as MEMTEST86 http://www.memtest86.com/ or DOCMEM http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp or GOLDMEMORY http://www.goldmemory.cz/ (the one I prefer) Here's one more site, a diagnostic utility from MS which you may find it helpful. http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp All the best, Vic ___ "Tony" wrote in message ...
